Kolkata: Cloudy Sky to Return With Thunder, Lightning Today; Rain to Bring Relief From Heat This Week

Weather forecasters expect the presence of cyclonic circulation over parts of south Bengal to trigger thunderstorm activities which will help lower the temperatures in Kolkata. In fact, the system is already pushing up cloud formation and causing intermittent spells of rain in some south Bengal districts, including East and West Midnapore, Jhargram and Purulia.

Kolkata weather: Met predicts rain today, nor'wester later this week

KOLKATA: The city's wait for rain may finally end. The Alipore weather office, which has predicted showers in the city possibly from Wednesday, is tracking a weather system developing over the Jharkhand region that can bring rain to Kolkata. This system can develop either into a cyclonic circulation or a trough of low pressure and end the 139-day dry spell. The wet spell is also likely to drag the mercury down. The last time ot rained in Kolkata was on October 25, 2022. Met office said the previous weather systems that led to the cloud formation were not strong enough to cause rain. This time, the system is good enough to bring in thundershowers. Starting from Wednesday, Kolkata is likely to be under a wet spell till March 20, it has been predicted. "There is a chance of rain in the city starting from Wednesday. The probability as well the intensity of rain is higher on March 18, 19 and 20. Apart from the likely formation of a weather system in Jharkhand and adjoining areas, there is abundant moisture incurring from the Bay of Bengal that makes the condition all the more favourable for rain," said Das. The last longest dry spell Kolkata endured was 172 days between October 24, 2005 and April 14, 2006, when the city did not get a single drop of rain.

Cyclone in Kolkata: Brace for another cyclonic circulation this weekend in Kolkata

KOLKATA: A day after Kolkata was left submerged by a cyclonic circulation, the Met office has predicted another one that is set to develop this weekend. But the impending weather system may not have the same impact on the weather in Kolkata as Monday’s circulation, said weathermen. The next one could form over east-central Bay of Bengal on September 25 and move towards northwest Bay — a trajectory which is likely to see it strike the Kolkata received light drizzles on Tuesday morning. Some areas, however, received a moderate downpour in the evening. Meanwhile, the cyclonic circulation that had triggered 142 mm rain on Monday making it the rainiest September day since September 25, 2007 moved towards West Midnapore on Tuesday as a low-pressure area. Even though it was travelling further westward towards Jhargram, Purulia and Bankura, the low-pressure continued to pull in a great deal of moisture from the sea. “This triggered light to moderate rain in Kolkata and the surrounding districts in the evening. The western districts received heavy rain and will continue to be lashed by showers till the circulation passes into Jharkhand,” added Das. The Met office, though, predicted a relatively ‘dry weather’ from Wednesday to Friday. “Barring an occasional drizzle and light monsoon rain, Kolkata may not have heavy showers. In fact, the temperature may go up a few notches,” said Das.
