Review / KTM 390 Adventure hands

I’ve been riding motorcycles all my life. I think I owned my very first one when I was 14. It was a 50cc Beta. From that day, I was hooked and with time I slowly progressed (as one should) to bigger and bigger engines. First, a 125. Then a 500, then a 600, then a 750 and finally, after a decade on two wheels, I was able to afford my very first 1000 cc motorcycle. I had learned how to navigate the weight of a big bike and from then on I never really felt the need to step back to a smaller displacement. After a decade riding big bikes I almost forgot how good it felt to ride something smaller, until I stumbled upon the 390 adventure. Let’s be honest. I am 6’3″ and I kind of dwarf the bike If I sit on it. So on learning that I was going to spend time with this “miniature” adventure bike, my reaction wasn’t exactly joy, especially because I was coming from a massive 1190 Adventure. But the bike looked great! It had a very simple but aggressive line and some extras that definitely drew my attention. The 390 Adventure I was given to test was equipped with Akrapovic muffler, Quickshifter+, Powerparts seat and Continental TCK 70, which are among my favourite tires. Rear suspension preload wasn’t adjustable, but rebound was, as on the front fork. One of my favorite features of this motorcycle is in fact its suspension. The WP Apex fitted on this bike are not top of the line (clearly), but they are hard and responsive for the weight of the bike. Considering that the overall price of...

Spec Showdown: KTM 390 Adventure Vs. Royal Enfield Himalayan

In November 2019, KTM unveiled the latest addition to its 390 lineup. After the RC and the Duke, the new Only one equally small-displacement model was gnarly enough to measure up to the new KTM. The Royal Enfield Himalayan launched four years ago and rapidly became a staple of the segment thanks to its serious adventure chops and small price tag. How does the premium KTM compare to the minimalistic Royal Enfield? That’s what we’re about to find out! New For 2020: 2020 KTM 390 Adventure 2020 Royal Enfield Himalayan Engine: 373cc, four-stroke, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder 411cc, four-stroke, air-cooled, single-cylinder Bore and Stroke: 89 mm x 60 mm 78mm x 86mm Transmission: 6 speeds 5 speeds Performance: 43 horsepower/- 25 horsepower/23.6 lb-ft Fuel Tank: 3.8 gallons 4 gallons Weight (wet): 379 pounds 428 pounds Price: $6,199 $4,749 So Similar, Yet So Different Even though the two motorcycles compete in the same, small-displacement adventure bike segment, they have almost completely polar opposite personalities. The The thing is that the sluggish performance and heavier weight actually work rather well for the Himalayan. This bike isn’t meant to get you anywhere fast—it’s meant to get you there, period. If you break down on the side of the road, chances are that if you’re mechanically inclined, whatever happened, you will likely be able to fix yourself. Plus, contrarily to most adventure motorcycles on the market with towering seat heights, the Enfield’s seat is set at an...

2023 KTM 390 Adventure

In our review of the 2020 model, our reviewer said the KTM 390 Adventure was “a lot of bike for the money, with an impressive list of standard features that make it a serious threat to value-oriented Japanese competitors like the Honda CB500X and Kawasaki Versys-X 300, as well as BMW’s G 310 GS.” Related: Advertisement The 2023 KTM 390 Adventure still features a compact 4-stroke DOHC 373cc Single with four valves, a balancer shaft, a PASC slip/assist clutch, and electronic fuel injection. Two catalytic converters ensure the system breathes within emission targets, and the vapor design of the 3.8-gal fuel tank also contributes to its eco-friendliness. Also returning for the 2023 model and contributing to the bike’s off-road persona is the Offroad ride mode (offering more rear-wheel slip) and linked Offroad ABS (disengaged on the rear, reduced on the front), as well as throttle-by-wire, Motorcycle Traction Control, and cornering ABS. Stopping power comes from Brembo BYBRE brakes (320mm front and 230mm rear discs with a 4-piston calipers on the front and single-piston in the rear), and the bike has adjustable WP APEX suspension. Rider‘s KTM coverage here. The KTM 390 Adventure also still has 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels shod in Continental TKC70 tires, but for 2023 the wheels are spoked (but still tubeless) and have black anodized aluminum rims. The bike also comes with a two-tier seat that can be easily removed to reveal storage space or swapped out for other models...
