KOMPAS.com - Dalam dunia internasional, Protokol Kyoto diadopsi (diterima sebagai suatu usulan) pada 11 Desember 1997. Karena kompleksnya proses ratifikasi (pengesahan), kesepakatan internasional ini baru mulai berlaku pada 16 Februari 2005. Dilansir dari Investopedia, Protokol Kyoto adalah kesepakatan internasional di antara berbagai negara untuk mengurangi emisi karbon dioksida (CO2) serta keberadaan gas rumah kaca di atmosfer. Kesepakatan ini diadopsi pada 1997 di Kyoto, Jepang, ketika gas rumah kaca mengancam iklim, keberadaan planet, serta kehidupan di Bumi. Menurut Pusat Data dan Analisa Tempo dalam buku Protokol Kyoto, Panduan Dunia Menghindari Pencemaran Udara (2020), Protokol Kyoto merupakan penjabaran lebih lanjut dari berbagai pertemuan tingkat dunia yang membahas perubahan iklim. Kyoto Protocol: India ratifies 2nd commitment period of Kyoto Protocol

The first commitment period under the Kyoto Protocol was from 2008-2012. The Doha Amendment to the Kyoto Protocol was adopted in Qatar in December 2012. The amendment includes new commitments for parties to the Kyoto Protocol who agreed to take on commitments in a second commitment period from January 2013 to December 2020 and a revised list of greenhouse gases to be reported on by Parties in the second commitment period, according to the UNFCCC website.
