Rayo Vallecano vs Barcelona, La Liga: Final Score 2

Barcelona wasted the chance to effectively end the title race and remain 11 points clear at the top of the La Liga table with seven games remaining thanks to a 2-1 defeat away to Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday night in Madrid. Barça were dominated in the first half, conceded two bad goals and couldn’t mount a late comeback, dropping all three points to a Rayo side that played an amazing match and deserved the victory in front of a great home crowd. FIRST HALF Barça were thoroughly outplayed by Rayo in the first 30 minutes of the game, easily losing possession in dangerous positions and being overwhelmed by the home team’s intensity, high pressing and quick ball movement. All of those things were a factor in the opening goal as Gavi lost an easy ball in midfield to Camello, who quickly moved the ball to Álvaro García and the winger fired home a powerful low shot into the bottom corner. Rayo successfully got in Barça’s head and the Blaugrana lost their composure, committing ugly fouls and complaining to the referee way too much. But the visitors began showing signs of life towards the end of the half as Pedri improved his level of play and became more involved in the action, and he nearly recorded a beautiful assist with a perfect pass for a Robert Lewandowski goal, but the strike was disallowed by VAR thanks to a very narrow offside. Barça had a couple of other dangerous attacks before the halftime whistle and looked better going forward, but still needed to play a lot better ...

Barcelona vs Atlético Madrid, La Liga: Final Score 1

Barcelona have restored their 11-point lead at the top of the La Liga table and are back to winning ways after a three-game winless streak thanks to a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Colchoneros at the end, but found a way to win and boost their chances of finishing the job in the title race. FIRST HALF Atlético nearly started the game with a goal as Antoine Griezmann hit the crossbar just 30 seconds into the match, and Barça’s defense was a little shaky in the first 10 minutes. But the Blaugrana eventually settled in and began dominating possession, and Frenkie De Jong had a huge impact on his return and ran the center of the park with his passing, ball carries and vision to keep the attacks going. Barça’s offense was quick and had good variety, but they couldn’t penetrate Atleti’s well-organized defense and the game was mostly played in the middle third without any meaningful chances for either side. There were some hard tackles and very good intensity from the two teams, but the game was lacking some individual brilliance. Griezmann nearly provided that himself and had a huge chance to put the visitors ahead with a shot from short range, but Marc-André ter Stegen made a fantastic reflex save. Shortly after that chance, a hopeful long ball from Ronald Araujo found Raphinha on the right wing and the Brazilian made a quick move and found Ferran Torres on the edge of the box, and the Spaniard showed great poise to take a touch in traffic and perfectly place his shot into th...

No sucedió.

Real Betis vs Barcelona, La Liga: Final Score 1

Barcelona remain perfect in 2023 and are eight points clear at the top of the La Liga thanks to a 2-1 win away to Real Betis at the Benito Villamarín on Wednesday night. The Blaugrana played a very strong game from start to finish and fully deserved the victory despite scoring a late own goal that complicated things a bit, but the Catalans managed to hold on to the three points and have a very comfortable lead for at least 24 hours. FIRST HALF Barça played an impressive opening period, with four midfielders on the pitch to control the game with possession and good variety in their passing to catch the Betis defense off guard and open up spaces. The Blaugrana missed two big chances early with Raphinha and Pedri unable to beat Rui Silva from point-blank range, and Raphinha had a goal disallowed for a narrow offside call. Pedri missed another big opportunity towards the end of the half and Gavi failed to convert an easy header that went just wide. On the other end the visitors barely suffered defensively, with a couple of dangerous Betis counter-attacks resulting in either shots that didn’t trouble Marc-André ter Stegen or very good blocks and interventions by the Barça defenders. At halftime Barça were the better team and had created enough to be ahead, but their finishing let them down and they needed to convert their chances to find the winning goals in the second half. SECOND HALF Barça’s second half was even better than the first: they improved on their strong opening fr...

La Liga’s final day relegation battle as it happened: Goodbye Valladolid and farewell Joaquin

La Liga’s nail biting relegation scrap delivered the action-packed crescendo neutrals were hoping for. Six teams were still in danger of going down before kick off, all desperately trying to avoid one final relegation spot. The permutations were complex — head-to-head rules throwing up myriad potential outcomes — but one thing was for sure. For all six teams involved, three points would keep them safe. Five games kicked off at 21:00 local time last night, all with a potential impact on the chaotic race for survival. Biggest of them all was Getafe’s trip to Real Valladolid, just two points separating the two sides. The home side started the day in 18th, requiring a win to survive, while the visitors needed just a point to complete their own dramatic comeback from the brink. Celta Vigo were on treacherous ground, too, hosting Barcelona and hoping Valladolid didn’t win the six-pointer at the Jose Zorilla if they couldn’t beat the champions. Heroic striker Iago Aspas started on the bench, Swiss striker Haris Seferovic taking his place, while Marc-Andre ter Stegen sought a record-breaking 27th clean sheet of the season. Espanyol, already relegated last weekend by a 93rd-minute goal, hosted an Almeria side also in need of a win. The game kicked off to a chorus of whistles from a furious section of home fans, wearing black and staging a walkout to protest the refereeing decisions against them last weekend. F inally, Cadiz also travelled to relegated opposition in Elche, while Val...

Barcelona vs Real Madrid, La Liga: Final Score 2

Barcelona have taken a gigantic step towards their first La Liga title since 2019 thanks to a hard-fought 2-1 comeback win in El Clásico against FIRST HALF The opening 10 minutes of this one were absolutely chaotic, with Madrid firing a shot on target after just 45 seconds followed by three big Barça chances before the sixth minute and a completely accidental opening goal by Madrid when Vinicius Junior’s attempted cross inside the box hit Ronald Araujo’s head and went into the net for an own goal. After a wild start Barça found themselves behind but didn’t lose their composure and began blitzing the Madrid defense with one dangerous attack after another, and Thibaut Courtois was forced into making a few big saves to keep his team in front. Barça pressed high and recovered the ball time and time again, and Madrid had to resort to some very physical play to slow the pace down and try to preserve their lead before the halftime whistle. It seemed Los Blancos were going to survive the Barça pressure and take a valuable lead into the break, but the Blaugrana never gave up and finally got their just reward: after a shot from Raphinha was blocked inside the box the rebound fell to Sergi Roberto, who took his time and found the back of the net with an excellent finish to score the equalizer and give Barça all the momentum. At halftime the home team was by far the better side but the score was somehow tied, and things were beautifully poised going into the second half. SECOND HALF T...
