What to wear to a lab interview?

Introduction Labs are spaces of research and are home to elements both safe and otherwise. Working at a lab would ideally mean that you are expected to be very careful and vigilant. Multiple responsibilities fall on the shoulders of a lab technician. Starting with the proper storage of chemicals and specimens to their disposal in the right way. They have to ensure that all the elements in the lab are safe and kept in a place that is accessible without any trouble. In this article, let’s see What to wear to a lab interview? It is the responsibility of the lab technician to clean up after the session in the lab. They must be aware of the effects of all the elements in the lab. They have to assist students, faculty, and working members with cleaning, sorting, and drying test tubes, beakers, Petri dishes, and other containers. They are also responsible for the safekeeping of the elements and the entire lab. They are to make note of losses in the lab and ensure that these losses are reported. How to dress for a lab interview • The most important aspect to keep in mind when you dress for a job such as this is to not overdo it. You want to leave an impression that makes them feel confident that you are a good candidate and your work in supporting them in the lab can prove very helpful. • Your clothes are the first thing that is observed by your interviewer. It is ideal that your outfit is crisp and simple. Clean and well-pressed pants, proper jackets, skirts that reach up till yo...

This is probably a really stupid and vain question but I've wanted to ask this for a long time. How do you guys dress in the lab/at the office? In my lab we essentially have two categories of dressers; the people who really put an effort into dressing well (usually the PI's and a few Ph.D students) and the people who just don't care (most Ph.D students and young researchers). Sadly I belong to the comfortable dressers rather than the people who dress well but I really want to change that. What do you think when you see another scientist who puts a lot of effort into how they dress? How do people generally dress in your labs? Feel free to riff on the topic. :) Kind regards, Alexandra

What to wear to lab: Fall edition

By Rita Algorri During my time as an “official laboratory safety enforcer,” (aka lowly lab tech in charge of wrangling undergrads and throwing improperly dressed folks out of lab), spring and summer notoriously brought tons of dress code related drama into our laboratories. Crop tops, flip-flops, short skirts, destroyed denim, shorts, and arguments that began with an assertive, “I swear these are actually shoes,” were all too commonplace. Wearing nitrile gloves or plastic grocery bags on your feet (true story) is unflattering, dangerous, and attracts the unwanted attention of the health and safety inspector who is side-eyeing your lack of shoe wearing from 300 feet away. Fortunately, lab-appropriate attire is a little easier in the fall and winter when it’s cold. You can bypass the dreaded plague of shorts-related FOMO and sweating profusely in long pants in 100°F heat. It’s important to note that here, “lab” refers to a “wet” lab, such as a molecular biology or chemistry lab. If you work in a “dry” lab or computer-based lab, you can wear basically whatever you want and I’m forever jealous of your sartorial autonomy. Similarly, for field work, there’s no particular dress code, but you’ll probably want to wear whatever it’s easiest and safest for you to work in. For example, if you’re going to be marching around in the snow all day, does it really make sense to wear shorts and heels? If you’re working in a wet lab, there are two basic dress code rules: 1.) Cover as much ski...

Laboratory Dress Code Practice Perspective The MSU Chemical Hygiene states in section 2.2B: “Confine long hair and loose clothing and always wear footwear which fully covers the feet.” Additionally in 5.3.2 “Protect exposed skin surfaces when there is a reasonable anticipation of a splash. Avoid wearing open-toed shoes, sandals, shorts, etc. when working with injurious or corrosive chemicals.” Standard Practice Employees working with hazardous chemicals in laboratories must wear closed-toe shoes, long pants or skirts which fully cover the legs, and a lab coat. Employees shall confine long hair and secure loose clothing and jewelry before beginning work. Each department or laboratory will determine required additional personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves and eye protection appropriate for working with specific materials. Guidelines • Closed-toe shoes are shoes that completely cover the feet and are well secured on to the foot • Long pants are trousers, slacks or pants that extend from the employees waist to the top of their shoes • Long skirts are skirts or skorts that extend from the employees waist to the top of their shoes • Lab coats are lightweight coats worn for the express purpose of protecting an employee’s skin and clothing from chemical splashes. The fiber content of a laboratory coat must be appropriate for the chemicals in use. Use all-cotton lab coats when working with flammable materials. Use flame-resistant (FR) lab coats when working with pyrop...
