Lalit Modi and his knack of pulling off surprises

Though tough to imagine, back in the day, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) lived in a cluttered two BHK apartment. Typical of those wily kinds with old money, they were low-key and conservative. And then Lalit Modi came along. He got the Indian Premier League (IPL) as well as the International Management Group and subsequently, more worrying acronyms — ED, CBI — would follow. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves in this story of how cricket couldn’t handle money and fame. Just back in london after a whirling global tour — Lalit Kumar Modi (@LalitKModi) Modi always had a knack of pulling off surprises, like he did late on Thursday when he announced on Twitter about a “new beginning” with Miss Universe 1994 Sushmita Sen. The post also had a suggestive ‘better half’ hashtag. Within minutes he would add a twist to his viral tweet. “Just for clarity. Not married – just dating each other. That too will happen one day,” was to be a quick rejoinder. With Modi there is never ever a dull moment. Just for clarity. Not married – just dating each other. That too it will happen one day. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 — Lalit Kumar Modi (@LalitKModi) The early Modi days in the BCCI were interesting times. The old-timers hated him. He was seen as an upstart. His Twenty20 venture bred mistrust. The maidan crick...
