Fires Burn Over 80 Homes, 180,000 Acres on Colville Reservation

OMAK & INCHELIUM— As of this print, the five fires that started during a wind event over the long Labor Day Weekend have destroyed over 80 homes and burned over 200,000 acres on the Colville Indian Reservation. This story was originally published by “A lot of people have stepped up in a lot of ways to help with this fire.” said Colville Business Council Chair Rodney Cawston, speaking at a press event in Omak. “It does take everyone to work together. I have had calls from federal and state congressman and their agencies that want to help, tribes and groups wanting to make donations but not wanting to interfere with those doing the work. I can’t believe the fire and the damage that has occurred. The descriptions of what people went through was just unbelievable. One family had 10 to 15 minutes. If you can imagine that, you’ve got 10 to 15 minutes to think, ‘What are you going to do,’ or ‘what are you going to take,’ or ‘What’s important to you.’ Then to see that fire roll over the hillside toward your home. The roar was so loud, coming at you like a creature, and when it hit them and their home it just turned completely black. When they came back to their home to find nothing, everything disintegrated. This smoke filled air is becoming all too common. There are things we need to deal with managing these fires, managing our natural resources. I’m very overwhelmed by all the good that has taken place.” Each of the fires started on Sunday, Sept. 6, along with a number of other ...

On September 11, Blind Luck Decided Who Lived or Died

Joseph Lott, a sales representative for Compaq computers, survived one of the deadliest days in modern American history because he had a penchant for “art ties,” neckties featuring famous masterpieces. “It began many years earlier, in the ’90s,” he said in an oral history with StoryCorps. “I love Impressionist paintings, and I use them as a way to make points with my kids. I’d put on an art tie, and then I would ask my kids—I have three daughters—I would say, ‘Artist identification?’ And they would have to tell me whether it was a van Gogh or a Monet, and we would have a little conversation about the artist.” On the morning of September 11, 2001, he had put on a green shirt before meeting colleagues at the Marriott hotel sandwiched between the Twin Towers, in advance of speaking at a conference that day at the restaurant Windows on the World. Over breakfast, his co-worker Elaine Greenberg, who had been on vacation the week before in Massachusetts, presented him with a tie she’d spotted on her trip that featured a Monet. “It was red and blue, primarily. I was very touched that she had done this,” Lott explained. “I said, ‘This is such a nice gesture. I think I am going to put this on and wear it as I speak.’ She said, ‘Well, not with that shirt. You’re not going to put on a red-and-blue tie with a green shirt.’” So when breakfast was done, his colleagues headed up to Windows on the World, located on the 104th floor of the North Tower, and Lott went back to his hotel room to...

Could V.S Was/Were Able To?

gravediggerWhich is correct ? Explain please ! A. The fire spread through the building very quickly, but fortunately everybody was able to escape. B. The fire spread through the building very quickly, but fortunately everybody could escapeIf you wish the meaning to be that everybody succeeded in escaping, you have to use A. B does not have that meaning. CJ Sorry, Gravedigger, but that was not your original question. You asked which sentence was correct, not "do they mean the same thing." Both sentences are grammatically correct. CJ is correct, using could means that it was possible for everyone to escape (there were no obstructions, locked doors, etc.), not that they succeeded in doing so. Hi CJ; Thanks so much for your gracious mediation. Would you comment on these variations - it seems that the present perfect and negative can be used in a specific case where not all got out safely: Although the fire spread through the building very quickly, everybody could have escaped. The fire spread through the building very quickly and some could not escape.
