U.P.: Lucknow University holds lecture on good governance in economics

The Atal Sushasan Peeth of department of public administration, University of Lucknow, organised a lecture on “Good Governance in Economics” on Saturday. Professor Arun Diwakar Nath Bajpai, vice chancellor, Atal Bihari Vajpayee University, Bilaspur, shared his economic point of view of good governance on the occasion. (Sourced) “Participation, balance, inclusiveness, transparency, reliability, stability, sustainability, equity and accountability, are basic elements of governance,” he said. “If these elements are not included, there is no meaning of governance,” Prof Bajpai added. He provided a unique perspective of good governance and economics through the lens of self-sufficiency and self-reliance to foster growth and development of the country. He reiterated the fact that policy processes should be directed towards a distribution-led growth model and should be guided by distributive justice. The event ended with Prof Manoj Dixit, head, public administration department, LU, calling for a synergy between the Atal Sushasan Peeth and the Chair of Atal Bihari Vajpayee University to enrich and facilitate intellectual depth in spheres of good governance.

Supreme Court stays Allahabad HC order on examining ‘kundali’ of rape victim, says ‘out of context’

The Supreme Court on Saturday stayed the Allahabad High Court verdict which directed the Head of Department (Astrology) in Lucknow University to determine if an alleged rape victim is a Mangali/Mangalik by examining her 'Kundali' in three weeks. Taking a suo moto cognizance of the order delivered by the Lucknow bench of the High Court, the apex court questioned the relevance of invoking the astrology aspect in the case. The Case The case pertains to the bail plea of a person accused of raping a woman on the pretext of marriage. While arguing for the bail of the accused, the defense submitted that the marriage cannot be solemnized as the woman is a mangalik. As per Hindu astrology, Mangali/Mangalik is a person born under the influence of Mars and such persons are not favorable for marriage as they can cause possible harm to their spouse. The "It has been argued by learned counsel for the applicant that the prosecutrix is mangali, therefore, marriage could not be solemnized and the same has been refused. On the other hand, Sri Vivek Kumar Singh learned counsel for the prosecutrix has submitted that the girl is not mangali. Harvard scholar to join LU for research on 'Nadwa'

LUCKNOW: Joh F Nowak, a research scholar from He will conduct research on 'Nadwat al-Ulama and Muslim identity in the late 19th century' for a period of six months. The scholar will carry out research at Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama, Lucknow with the support of LU. Purnima Mehta, director general, American Institute of Indian Studies (AIIS), in a letter to Lucknow University's Office of International Affairs, has requested LU to affiliate Nowak with it and designate a faculty member as Joh's academic supervisor. "Nowak's research proposal focuses on how different north Indian Muslim communities in the late 19th and early 20th century navigated disagreements amongst themselves over who should be included in the category Muslim. "I tentatively plan to focus my archival work on polemical debates between the Barelwis and the Nadwa," said Nowak in his submitted proposal for research. Meanwhile, Lucknow University officials said, "We have received the request and it will be approved by the vice-chancellor Prof Alok Kumar Rai shortly."
