Fish is the queen of water Her life is water Touch her, she will get scared. Take her out of water, she will die. "Machli" means "fish" in Hindi - it's from the Sanskrit root word - "Matsya". Comments Bhoomika said: "I have some friends in the US. One of their kids is learning 'Hindi' in the Montessary school she is admitted somewhere near Washington DC... a 5 yr old kid. It seems in US they teach another version which goes like... 'Machli jal ki rani hai Jeevan uska pani hai Haath lagaoge to dar jayegi Bahar nikaloge to so jayegi.' 'Mar' in Hindi means 'die' while 'so' in Hindi means 'sleep'. It seems the Indian Americans do not want to teach their children a cruel tale of death, but would rather they believe a somewhat happier tale where the fish goes to sleep. Just some food for thought! :) " Over 50 Favorites (150+ Pages) Many with Sheet Music and Links to...

Movie Review: ‘Machli Jal Ki Rani Hai’ – horror of horrors

The horror genre in Bollywood suffers because of its inability to reinvent itself over the years. Linda Blair played the girl possessed in William Friedkin’s “The Exorcist”. Forty years later the very talented Swara Bhaskar gives the devilish avatar a try. She works hard on getting the twisted and contorted face and body language right. But Swara, bless her possessed soul, is let down by a tacky script and the director’s inability to take the spooky genre where it hasn’t been before. It’s all familiar, and not done in any way that can be considered even reasonably original. The supernatural murders attempt to be so gruesome that they end up being unintentionally funny. A maid (more made-up than her ‘maalkin’) is pierced in her eyes with a hanging on the wall. Later the hanging reappears on the wall, the blood and gore all washed away. Admittedly “ Machhli Jal Ki Rani Hai” has some genuinely scary moments. There is a sequence where his wife serving him fish for dinner surprises Swara’s screen-spouse. Until his eyes fall on the fish tank and he sees their pet fish missing from the tank… Then towards the end there is a twist in the tale, which is bound to send a chill up your spine, regardless of whether you believe in ghosts or not. The payoff comes too infrequently, and too late. Most of the plot is covered in what appears to be an occasion to give idle housewives and aspiring actors a chance to play out their acting fantasies. The dialogues are delivered in unnecessarily l...

'Machli Jal Ki Rani Hai' review: The film delivers more laughs than shrieks

Cast: Swara Bhaskar, Deepraj Rana Director: Debaloy Dey With a title that has been borrowed from a popular nursery rhyme for children, those who have neither seen its rushes nor posters are expected to consider 'Machli Jal Ki Rani Hai' a film that is pretty much made to please kids. Even though the poster reads 'Yeh Bachchon Ki Nahi Badon Ki Film Hai', explicitly mentioning that it is strictly for adults, those who have viewed this ridiculously hilarious 'horror' film would have forgiven the makers had they not included the statutory warning. For the film delivers more laughs than shrieks, making it an apt choice for kids, not adults. But yes, you ought to be brave to sit through this two-hour long torture and sustain your interest as its bizarre, silly storyline unfolds. Directed by Debaloy Dey, 'Machli Jal Ki Rani Hai' revolves around Mumbai-based married couple Ayesha (Swara Bhaskar) and Uday Saxena (Bhanu Uday). Uday, a mechanical engineer by profession, shifts to Jabalpur after he and wife Ayesha meet with a major road accident that leaves an impact on her mind and devolves into depression. Unfortunately, the shift doesn't help Ayesha overcome her depression. On the contrary, her condition worsens as she begins to feel the presence of bad spirits in her new house and tries her best to combat them. Swara Bhaskar, who earned huge appreciation for roles in 'Tanu Weds Manu' and 'Ranjhanaa', succeeds in scaring you with a handful of creepy moments, but that's not enough. I...
