Several feared dead as Indore

By India Today News Desk: At least 15 people were killed, while nearly 25 others were injured after a bus fell off a bridge in Madhya Pradesh's Khargone on Tuesday. According to the details, more than 50 passengers were travelling on the bus at the time of the accident. The bus was travelling to Indore when it skidded off the bridge and fell beneath. ALSO READ Commenting on the accident, MP Home Minister Dr Narottam Mishra said, "15 people have died, 20-25 people are injured who have been shifted to District Hospital, Khargone." "The Chief Minister has announced ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased. He has also ordered an inquiry into the incident," Mishra added. On Sunday, a Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus rammed into a shop in the western suburb of Andheri in Mumbai. The incident took place on Mahakali road in Andheri (east), a spokesperson of the transport body told PTI. The bus was heading towards Andheri station when the driver lost control on a slope and rammed the vehicle into a shop, he said. Madhya Pradesh Khargone bus accident: At least 22 people were killed, while around 20 others were injured after a private bus fell off a bridge in Madhya Pradesh’s Khargone on Tuesday morning. The bus was en route to Indore when it skidded off the bridge and fell beneath. The incident took place at 8.40 am. The bus broke the railings of the Dasanga bridge and fell on a dry bed of the Borad river near Dongargaon village, state Home Minister Narottam Mishra said. The vehicle was carrying around 50 passengers when it met with the accident, a police official said. Twenty-two people were killed in the accident, Mishra said. The injured persons were admitted to the district hospital in Khargone. The police were conducting a probe into the incident, he added. Following the accident, the Madhya Pradesh government announced immediate ex gratia of Rs 4 lakhs each to the families of the deceased. The government also announced financial assistance of Rs 50,000 each to the seriously injured and Rs 25,000 each to those who received minor injuries in the Khargone bus accident. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condoled the loss of lives in the road accident and announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the next of kin of the deceased. Bus was heading towards Indore Khargone Sub-Divisional Officer (police) Rakesh Mohan Shukla told TOI that the bus heading towards Indore fell off after breaking through the railing of the bridge on Borad river bridge near Dongargaon, about 34km from the district headquarters. He said that the river was completely dry. Driver 'slept' over the wheels Shukla said that at present the bus driver has not been traced. According to the preliminary information, it appears that he had a bout of sleep and lost control of the vehicle. The bus turned turtle after falling down. Villagers pushed it back on its wheels and rescued the injured passengers, before police arrived at the scene. District collector Shivraj Singh Verma, superintendent of police DS Yadav and other officers have reached the spot to oversee the rescue work. Chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan took to Twitter and expressed grief over the loss of lives in the accident.

Soon after the incident, locals swung into action and started a rescue operation. In the meantime, local police and administration were informed. The injured were rushed to hospitals in tractors trollies as ambulances reached the spot a little later. The bus, with 50 people on board, was on its way to Indore when it fell from a bridge in Khargone's Dasanga village. Emergency services with the help of local villagers are engaged in rescue operation, Mr Mishra said. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the families of those who were killed in the accident, Rs 50,000 each to those who are 'seriously' injured and Rs 25,000 each to people with minor injuries. Chief Minister Chouhan's government will also bear the costs of treatment of those injured. "An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased in the bus accident in Khargone, Madhya Pradesh. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000," the PMO's office tweeted.
