BJP mulls Lok Sabha MPs for Madhya Pradesh elections

With less than six months separating the assembly elections and the 2024 national elections, the party’s poll planners don’t seem averse to taking a calculated risk of fielding some of their sitting 28 LS members from Madhya Pradesh in the state polls. Only six months after having narrowly lost the 2018 assembly polls to the Congress, the BJP bounced back with a stellar performance in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, winning 28 out of the 29 seats in MP. Four years after the LS polls, the party which is faced with a resurgent Congress following the Karnataka assembly triumph, is now eyeing the “most winnable” candidates in the assembly polls. “It’s not that all 28 sitting MPs won in 2019 just riding on the Modi wave, they also have deep influence in multiple assembly segments of their parliamentary constituencies,” a senior state BJP functionary told this newspaper. While there are 28 LS members of BJP from MP, names of 15 of them are doing the rounds as probable candidates in the assembly polls. Those sitting MPs, include Sudhir Gupta (Mandsaur), Guman Singh Damor (Ratlam-Jhabua), Anil Firojiya (Ujjain), DD Uikey (Betul), Dr Dhal Singh Bisen (Balaghat), Gajendra Singh Patel (Khargone), union minister Faggan Singh Kulaste (Mandla), Ganesh Singh (Satna), Riti Pathak (Sidhi), Himadri Singh (Shahdol), Dr KP Singh Yadav (Guna), Rodmal Nagar (Rajgarh), Uday Pratap Singh (Hoshangabad), Vivek Shejwalkar (Gwalior), Mahendra Singh Solanky (Dewas) and Sandhya Rai (Bhind). Some of these sit...

Congress will come to power in Madhya Pradesh in 2023 polls, says Kamal Nath

By Ravish Singh: Senior Congress leader Kamal Nath on Saturday said that the Grand Old Party will come to power and form its government in the state after winning the 2023 Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections. The upcoming elections in Madhya Pradesh are scheduled to be held in or before November, to elect all 230 members of the state Legislative Assembly. "...Considering the feedback from the entire state, party workers can proudly say that the Congress will form the government in Madhya Pradesh," Kamal Nath was quoted saying. Kamal Nath, the chairperson of the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee, added, "We have been working on appointing mandalam, sector, and booth in-charges; and the next in line is the selection of panna in-charges..." Jaiprakash Agarwal, former MP and All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge for Madhya Pradesh Congress, was also present at the meeting. Agarwal said that all the state party leaders and workers are "ready to form the Congress government, under the leadership of Kamal Nath, in Madhya Pradesh." Congress has a strong hold in Madhya Pradesh, and the cadres just need to prepare for the upcoming elections with unity and enthusiasm, he added.

What voters want: Issues that may affect 2023 Madhya Pradesh polls

By Milind Ghatwai: Of the five states going to polls later this year, Madhya Pradesh is perhaps the most important test for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The party will have to find ways to get around the massive anti-incumbency sentiment built over 18 years, notwithstanding the brief period after the 2018 Assembly elections when it was out of power. And the Congress party is capitalising on this. When Priyanka Gandhi Vadra outlined the contours of the Congress party’s campaign in Jabalpur on June 12, she may have gotten an odd fact wrong but she did not miss a trick in highlighting local issues that will hurt the ruling BJP. Instead of saying idols of Saptarishis had collapsed due to gusty winds in Ujjain recently, Priyanka claimed that building after building collapsed. But the very mention of the damage at the Mahakal Lok corridor, inaugurated in October 2022 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with much religious fanfare, was enough to rattle the BJP. Issues reissued Senior Congress leaders in the state have highlighted corruption, rising costs, unemployment, expensive electricity, and irregularities in the distribution of fertilisers among the main issues the people are grappling with. These issues, however, aren’t new. In November last year, farmers under the banner of the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh, an affiliate of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, organised a protest in Bhopal to highlight the shortage of fertilisers, irregular electricity supply, and non-payment of compensa...

The launch of the party’s bid for the coming elections was launched in the presence of Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and former Chief Minister and MP Congress Committee president Kamal Nath. The event saw the duo conduct a Narmada Pooja at Jabalpur’s Gwarighat along with other Congress leaders of the state. Addressing a rally a short while later, Priyanka came down heavily on the Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led BJP government in the state, citing numerous scams under its rule. “BJP has done 225 scams in 220 months of rule. MP Election: Congress Will Form Govt With 116 Seats, Kamal Nath To Be CM Face, Says Digvijaya Singh

MP Polls 2023: Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh stated on Monday that the grand old party will form the next government in Madhya Pradesh after sweeping more than 116 of the 230 seats, with Kamal Nath as the chief ministerial face, news agency PTI reported. MP Assembly elections are scheduled for later this year. When questioned about the number of seats the Congress will win and who will be its chief ministerial candidate in the upcoming polls, Singh stated: "We need 116 seats to form a government. We are going to get more than 116 seats. The party face will be Kamal Nath." When asked about the Congress' chances of defeating Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the upcoming general election, Singh stated that this is not a presidential election. "Under the Parliamentary form of government, elections are fought between parties in which a party wins, not a candidate," he added. When questioned about the call by certain Hindu preachers and BJP leaders to transform India into a Hindu Rashtra, Singh responded that if they don't believe in the Constitution, all constitutional officials, including BJP leaders, should retire. He referred to the Ladli Behna Yojana, which was announced by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan last month, as a "election stunt." "Chouhan has been the chief minister since 2003. In between Congress came to power for just 15 months (December 2018 to March 2020). Why did he not think of women's welfare in 18-and-a-half years?" he questioned. The Madhya P...

Assembly election 2023: With Chouhan, Scindia on same side, here's what battlefield MP looks like

By Milind Ghatwai: “ Maaf karo maharaj, hamara neta Shivraj” — Forgive me my lord, our leader is Shivraj — was a catchy slogan used by the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the 2018 assembly elections in a bid to contrast the royal past of Jyotiraditya Scindia with the self-effacing demeanour of Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who had by then become the longest-serving Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. The campaign didn’t help the BJP return to power for the fourth consecutive time in a state that used to be a traditional Congress bastion till the early 2000s. In the 230-member house, the Congress won 114 seats, five more than the saffron party’s tally of 109. Despite falling short of securing a simple majority, the Congress party formed a government with the help of four independents, one Samajwadi Party member and two Bahujan Samaj Party MLAs. Five years later, the scion of the erstwhile royal family of Gwalior and Chouhan are on one side. Scindia, now a minister in the Narendra Modi government, helped the BJP pull down the Congress government in March 2020. The rebellion — some call it Operation Lotus — saw Chouhan again occupy the chief minister’s bungalow, located near the picturesque Badi Jheel in Bhopal. A slew of by-elections later, the BJP improved its tally to 127 and reduced the Congress to 96 seats.
