Rebel with a cause

My one and only meeting with great Hindi poet Mahadevi Verma took place on November 30, 1983 in Delhi’s Civil Lines area where she was staying at a friend’s place. She had come to the Capital to receive the prestigious Jnanpith award from British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on November 28 and Vinod Mehta, editor of The Sunday Observer, had commissioned me to do an interview with her. Armed with a borrowed tape recorder, I landed at the house in Civil Lines unannounced and saw that Mahadevi Verma was engrossed in a lively conversation with three Chinese embassy officials who had come to present her with Hindi books printed in China. Mahadevi, whose pen-portrait of a Chinese peddler titled ‘Pheriwala’ was considered a masterpiece, was telling them how she had sent a painting and a poem done on bhojapatra (palm leaf) to Mao Zedong after the victory of the Chinese Revolution, how overwhelmed she had felt at that time when she learnt that a poet had led a successful revolution in China, and how sore she was at the Sino-Indian war. “Today,” said she, “the big powers have turned smaller countries into a dumping ground for their obsolete weapons. The countries of Asia and Africa should unite in the face of this situation. Only the black and the coloured people can unite. The whites will never be with us.” One could see that even at 76, she remained an anti-colonial freedom fighter. Speaking her mind Her comments on the contemporary literary scene too confirmed this. She felt ...

5 Beautiful Stories on Animals by Mahadevi Verma

Another facet of the author’s life was her motherly love for animals. Being a strong advocate against animal cruelty, she penned a gamut of stories on her pets who unexpectedly stepped into her life. Source: My own experiences are quite relatable. When in Patna, I used to notice people selling birds in our lane. Pigeons, parakeets and sparrows would peep out of their cages and cry when carried from one part of the city to another. On my insistence, my parents once bought me a parrotand I setit free after tending to it for almost two months. We have had other species of birds at home too. Fish and dogs became our regular guests as well. We lost them one by one though. But believe me, the sorrow of losing pets is nothing when compared to the memories of the quality time spent together.Mahadevi Verma’s animal stories revolve around this theme and havea personal touch. Here are some stories that you may find interesting. A word of recommendation — try reading the original stories in Hindi to savour the flavour of the text! 1. Neel kanth: Picture for representation only. By Worm That Turned (Own work) [ There is a doubt lurking in the minds of Mahadevi’s well-wishers that Neel kanth and Radha are not pea-chicks as claimed by the trader. As Neel kanth matures, he assumes the role of the master of the house, even going to the extent of killing the snake who dares to kill therabbit. Enter Kubja, Radha’s rival; and Neel kanth’s happy abode turns upside down. Neel kanth passes away ...

Independence Day: Incredible Women Who Helped In India's Freedom Struggle

Around the time Mahatma Gandhi was encouraging Indians to peacefully oppose the colonial rule and freedom fighters were trying to force the British to back down, a number of Indian women were quietly taking the centre stage and shaping the Independence movement from within. From calling for abolishing casteism to the prohibition of liquor; more directly – they were taking on the challenge to fight the imperialists to end their tyrannical rule. Some with their poetry called for a ‘Swadeshi' movement while others built communities in a fractured nation to boost social reforms. As we celebrate the 75th Independence Day, it is imperative that we remember some of these women with extraordinary courage and commitment to bring a change. 1. Savitribai Phule Savitribai Phule worked selflessly to empower women in India, repeatedly urging them to educate themselves, particularly those who came from the so-called backward castes. She said education will the weapon that will free women from social discrimination. She is known as India's first female teacher. With her husband, Jyotirao Phule (Jyotiba), she started teaching girls in Pune and fought off those who opposed girl education at that time. 2. Mahadevi Verma Born in a progressive Hindu family in Allahabad in 1907, Mahadevi Verma evolved into a Hindi poet, freedom fighter and educationist. She adopted Gandhian ideals and herself gave up speaking in English and worked primarily khadi. She served as the principal and then as the vic...
