Maharashtra MLC election results 2022: BJP wins 5 seats; NCP, Shiv Sena 2 each

MUMBAI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won five of the ten legislative council seats in Maharashtra on Monday while in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) —NCP and Shiv Sena secured two seats each and Congress managed to secure one seat. BJP’s fifth candidate Prasad Lad secured 28 votes and won the election. Last week Fadnavis had ensured the win of all the three Rajya Sabha candidates. State BJP president Chandrakant Patil said the party secured 134 preferential votes. The party has 106 MLAs besides the support of seven other MLAs. He fully credited Fadnavis for the BJP’s victory. The opposition leader said he didn't not believe in miracles. “It is the discontent within the MVA that has come to the fore and converted into votes,” said Fadnavis. He hugged Girish Mahajan, the party MLA from Jalgaon, as he came down to speak to the media. Mahajan has been instrumental in holding successful negotiations with Hitendra Thakur’s Bahujan Vikas Aghadi which has three MLAs. Fadnavis said only he knows the truth (on the MLAs who voted for the BJP). He has succeeded in splitting 21 votes. “I thank all the MLAs from all the parties as also the independents who helped us and ensured the victory of our fifth candidate. Varsha Gaikwad becomes first woman chief of Mumbai Congress

By Press Trust of India: Four-time MLA Varsha Gaikwad who was appointed as Mumbai Congress chief on Friday faces a daunting task of rejuvenating the cadre ahead of elections to the civic body as well as Lok Sabha and Maharashtra Assembly. Elections to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), long due, are expected to be held before the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. She worked as a lecturer at the Siddharth College of Arts, Science and Commerce here before entering politics. She holds a master's degree in mathematics. She was a minister first in the Democratic Front government of the Congress and NCP and later in Maha Vikas Aghadi government of the Congress, NCP and Shiv Sena.

Kasba Peth, Chinchwad bypolls results: The counting of votes for Maharashtra's Kasba Peth and Chinchwad byelections began at 8 am on Thursday. According to initial trends, and as expected, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition are locked in a close fight, with the BJP's candidate leading in Chinchwad, and the MVA nominee ahead in Kasba Peth. In Kasba Peth, on the other hand, Congress nominee Ravindra Dhangekar, with 11,121 votes (50.03%), is ahead of the BJP's Hemant Rasane (10,667 votes, 47.99%). Kasba Peth and Chinchwad, both assembly constituencies in Pune, witnessed bypolls on Feb 27. The exercise was necessitated due to the passing away of BJP legislators from each: Mukta Tilak (Kasba Peth) and Laxman Jagtap (Chinchwad).

New Delhi: The stage is set for the biennial Maharashtra Legislative Council (MLC) elections as the voting has begun on Monday with a total of 11 candidates in the fray for the 10 Council seats. The election will witness a close fight between the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance’s Congress and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The MLAs from the electoral college for the MLC elections. The effective strength of the 288-member Maharashtra House has been reduced to 285 following the death of Shiv Sena MLA Ramesh Latke, while two NCP MLAs -Nawab Malik and Anil Deshmukh - are presently in jail and cannot vote as per the High Court order. The Election Commission had announced polling to six seats to the Maharashtra Legislative Council from five local constituencies on December 10. In the election for two seats in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Shiv Sena (Sunil Shinde) and the BJP (Rajhans Singh) bagged one seat each unopposed. In the Kolhapur and Nandurbar-Dhule MLC polls also, the Congress and the BJP respectively secured one seat each unopposed. Polling to the Nagpur and Akola-Buldhana-Washim seats was held on December 10. According to the District Information Office, in Nagpur, of the 554 votes polled, BJP candidate and former state energy minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule secured 362 votes, while Mangesh Deshmukh, the independent candidate who was supported by the MVA, got 186 votes. On the eve of polling, the Congress nominee, Ravindra Bhoyar, had expressed his inability to contest, following which the party backed Deshmukh. However, Bhoyar later contested the poll and got only one vote. In a major upset, Shiv Sena's three-time MLC Gopikishan Bajoria was defeated by BJP's Vasant Khandelwal in Akola-Washim-Buldhana.
