Is Devendra Fadnavis’s PA Sumit Wankhede eyeing a poll debut?

In what is seen as a precursor to an eventual plunge in electoral politics, Sumit Wankhede, the powerful personal assistant (PA) of Maharashtra deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, has been appointed by the BJP as its in-charge for the Wardha Lok Sabha seat. There are speculations that Wankhede may contest the 2024 Maharashtra assembly election as a BJP nominee from Arvi in Vidarbha’s Wardha district. The seat is represented by the party’s Dadarao Keche, who is said to be upset over Wankhede’s growing presence on his turf. However, Wankhede denied contentions that he was likely to take the plunge during the assembly polls. The BJP, on June 8, announced a list of ‘Lok Sabha Nivadnuk Pramukhs’, or election in-charges, for the Lok Sabha polls. Wankhede has been given charge of the Wardha Lok Sabha seat. The BJP’s Ramdas Tadas, a wrestler and former Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) man, is a two-term MP from Wardha. Wardha has sent veterans from the Congress to the Lok Sabha, such as Kamalnayan Bajaj, Vasant Sathe, Datta Meghe and Prabha Rau. The constituency covers six assembly segments, namely Wardha, Arvi, Hinganghat, Deoli from Wardha district and Morshi and Dhamangaon Railway from Amravati district. Of the six seats, four are held by the BJP, one by the Congress and one by an Independent. Already, two of Fadnavis’s PAs and aides, Abhimanyu Pawar and Shrikant Bhartiya, are legislators. While Pawar was elected as an MLA from Ausa in Latur in 2019 after defeating former ...

SC verdict on Maharashtra political crisis today. CM Shinde, 15 other MLAs face likely disqualification

Mumbai: The Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court is Thursday expected to deliver its judgment on the Maharashtra political crisis. Back in March of this year, the apex court had reserved its verdict on a series of cross-petitions submitted by the factions of Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde. These petitions pertained to the crisis that had taken place in the state last year, following a split within the Shiv Sena party, as a result of which Shinde had become the chief minister and formed a government with the BJP in June of 2022. Among the petitions submitted, one seeks the disqualification of 16 Shiv Sena MLAs — from Shinde’s faction — who had initially rebelled against Thackeray’s leadership. The rebel group led by Shinde had, in turn, issued a notice against the Maharashtra Assembly Deputy Speaker, Narhari Zirwal, which stated that any action taken against the dissident Sena MLAs under the Constitution’s 10th Schedule (which deals with disqualification on the grounds of defection) could not be pursued since a notice for Zirwal’s removal was already At present, the composition of the house is as follows: the BJP holds 105 MLAs and has the support of seven independents. The Shiv Sena has 40 MLAs and the backing of 10 independents, as well as 1 MNS MLA. This comes to a total of 163 seats for the government, which is well over the halfway mark of 145. The opposition camp has 53 NCP MLAs, 45 Congress MLAs, 16 Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) MLAs, 2 from...
