UP beats Maharashtra, southern states to emerge as medical capital

But of the five proposals sent last year, the MCI approved only one. Again this year, data from the MCI shows Maharashtra has dispatched five new proposals. “College managements in Maharashtra are largely the ones with political backing. In the past, they started sugar mills and medical colleges for the kind of sops they received from the government. With most of that stopping, we are not seeing many private trusts coming forward to start medical colleges,” said an official. A principal of a private college in Maharashtra added, “Those of us who did not benefit from this kind of political largesse are still running our institutes in deficit. The time will come when only large companies will look at starting medical colleges or the state will have to step in in a big way to ramp up the count of medical seats.” In the past five years, between 2014-15 and 2018-19, UP saw 18 new medical schools open doors, followed by Rajasthan and Karnataka, which saw approvals for starting 11 colleges each. However, only eight new colleges came up in Maharashtra. If one looks at the pan-India numbers, a total of 121institutes came up in the past five years. But private institutes claim a considerable chunk of the pie. “So many of these are colleges started with the aim of making money. Starting a medical college is a state’s responsibility if we want good health, if we want genuine doctors. Else, they are going to pay crores in fees and, upon graduating, they will want to recover their expen...
