Maitreyi Ramakrishnan on 'Never Have I Ever' and the team she's always been on

(Evan Mulling / For The Times) This interview contains spoilers for Season 4 of Netflix’s “Never Have I Ever.” Maitreyi Ramakrishnan was 17 when she and her best friend saw a tweet from Mindy Kaling announcing a casting call for her new Netflix series. The pair headed to the library’s community center in their hometown of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, to put themselves on tape. Kaling and co-creator Lang Fisher were going into production on their series “ “It’s really hard to get me to be nervous,” she recalled recently of her first day ever on a set. “I just remember Lang’s first note to me was, ‘OK, so that was great, but just let me just slow it down by like, 70%.’ I was talking so fast because I was so excited. I was like Busta Rhymes with my lines.” When I Maitreyi Ramakrishnan bids farewell to Netflix’s coming-of-age comedy “Never Have I Ever”: “For me, the ending is more about the fact that she’s back at the altar, and she’s praying, and she’s so grateful for not only the people around her but the life she’s living.” Sitting at a table inside a restaurant at a West Hollywood hotel on a recent weekday, Ramakrishnan, now 21, is as effervescent and affable as ever discussing the final season in between moments of praising the “Shrek” soundtrack and jokingly expressing frustration at her cast’s poor showing on “Family Feud.” In the time since filming wrapped last summer, Ramakrishnan, like her fictional alter ego, headed to college. After initially deferring admission t...

Devi, an overzealous South Asian teenager, spent most of her time in high school navigating budding romances, learning who she is and grieving her father’s death. In the fourth season of Netflix’s “Never Have I Ever,” she finishes her final chapter at the fictional high school as a stronger and better version of herself. “She’s embracing her emotions, and she’s learned how to control them in a way that empowers herself and empowers others. It makes her a better friend, a better family member, a better romantic partner and a better version of herself,” Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, who plays Devi, said in an interview at the “Never Have I Ever” Netflix Golden reception Tuesday in New York City. Devi begins her senior year caught in a love triangle with nemesis Ben Gross (Jaren Lewison), to whom she recently lost her virginity, and art student Margot (Victoria Moroles). After Ben chooses to be with Margot, Devi sets her eyes on bad boy Ethan (Michael Cimino). Ramona Young as Eleanor Wong, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Devi and Lee Rodriguez as Fabiola Torres in season four of "Never Have I Ever." Lara Solanki / Netflix Ramakrishnan said that this season, Devi explores her romantic relationships in a new and healthier way. When Ethan jeopardizes her chances to make a good impression with a Princeton recruiter, she ends their new but passionate relationship. “I love how she has navigated her worth when it comes to romantic relationships, especially as a young woman. The series comes to an end this summer with a fourth and final season, in which Devi leaves high school and its colorful characters behind for the next chapter of her life, whatever that may look like. Ramakrishnan, now 21 and every bit as witty as her onscreen counterpart, can relate to the ensuing uncertainty. “It’s weird, I really did grow up onscreen with Devi,” she tells the Cut. “I started fresh out of high school, and then basically reentered high school for the next four years.” It’s a double graduation for Devi and Maitreyi alike, which calls for a little taste-test celebration. How are you feeling about the final season? All good things have to come to an end. I have a lot of mixed emotions. As an audience member, I’ve always been team end stories when they need to end; I don’t like when TV drags on just for the sake of it. So as a fan, I’m glad it’s ending now instead of getting dragged out. But as an actor, it’s more complicated. It’s sad but also exciting. When I actually graduated high school, I had no idea I was going to do this. It’s a new chapter — I genuinely have no idea what I’m going to do after this. The show, and your performance in particular, has done such a great job of capturing the consistency of grief. We see Devi’s grief evolve, but it never neatly resolves....
