Will mallakhamb be able to make it as demo sport at 2028 LA Olympics?

Will mallakhamb, a traditional Indian sport, be a demonstration sport in the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028? Well, attempts are certainly being made in that direction by those running the sport. In a determined bid to considerably enhance the popularity of mallakhamb, the Mallakhamb Federation of USA is seeking affirmations and letters of recommendations from various National sports federations and consul-generals to pave the way for the martial art to be a spectator (demonstration) sport at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Mallakhamb: History, Origin, Unique Features & More

Mallakhamb is an ancient Indian martial art and has also been recognised as a traditional sport fighting to bag its spot in today’s sports world. The word ‘Mallakhamb’ comes from coalescing two words- ‘malla’ meaning wrestler and ‘ khamb’ meaning pole. The gymnast performs aerial yoga postures on a wooden pole, a cane or simply a rope. Traditionally, a wooden pole is used to perform yoga postures, which is made of Sheesham or Indian Rosewood and smoothened by castor oil. History and Origin Mallakhamb has a history that dates back to the twelfth century. A text named ‘Manasolhas’ that belongs to the Chalukya kings mentions a sport wherein wrestlers practice onto a pole to maintain their agility and postures. With the end of the Chalukya kingdom, the sport too was abandoned. It was only when Balambhatt Dada Deodhar, the fitness and sports instructor to Peshwa Bajirao II, reintroduced it to his pupils and soldiers. This was how Mallakhamb was revived in the nineteenth century. He used this sport to enhance the fitness levels of the soldiers and a significant tactic to be used in Guerrilla warfare. The sport is still striving to survive in today’s world. Mallakhamb debuted in the National Gymnastics Championships in 1958. The Gymnastics Federation of India made a move and directed to include Mallakhamb in the annual championships. But then, Mallakhambh did not succeed in making a mark of itself and soon was ruled out from the list of sports. In 1981, some Mallkambh enthusiasts...

History Of Mallakhamb

Mallakhamb (Mal-Khamb in Marathi) is an Indian system of exercise for wrestlers. It is of recent origin and there is no major reference to it in ancient literature. Mallakhamb was invented by one Balambhat-dada Deodhar, a resident of Konkan, Goa. Balambhat-dada Deodhar was born in a poor Brahmin family in 1780. He came to Pune with his parents, who migrated in search of sustenance. Since his childhood he was deeply interested in doing physical exercises and became a good wrestler in his late teens. According to a story, Balambhat Deodhar used to practice meditation and once when he was meditating before the Saptasringi temple at Vani near Nasik, he had darshan of Hanuman. Hanuman was pleased with his devotion and taught him the mallakhamb exercises for which the iron pillar in the courtyard of the Devi temple was used. He was ecstatic by the gift from his favorite Bhagavan. He then started practicing the mallakhamb for which he observed that a wooden pillar would be more convenient. After prolonged practice, he invented some new exercises and started training young people and showing them how it can go a long way in making the body flexible. His favorite disciple was one Kondabhat Nana Godhoel, who in turn trained Damodar Guru Moghs, and both of them became experts in mallakhamb. It is said that Damodhar Guru Moghs became a champion because he would practice mallakhamb 1600 times a day and wrestle with forty wrestlers every day. Mallakhamb is a wooden pillar about 6 to 8 f...
