Cholas are back! The most-awaited trailer of Ponniyin Selvan 2 is here. After teasing fans with some intriguing posters andteasers, on Wednesday (March 29), the makers finally released the trailer for the forthcoming magnum opus in a star-studded ceremony hosted at the Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai, India. The trailer takes us back into the enchanting world of Cholas where many conspiracies, political intrigue, romantic relationships, and battles for the throne are taking place. The three-minute trailer opens with a voice-over informing us that Arunmozhi Varma has passed away and introducing Madhuranthakan as their new Prince. WION's review reads: "The movie largely benefits from having source material which is considered to be one of the milestones in Tamil literature. While no protagonist gets massive screen time alone, it is the overall story which keeps the audience engaged. Comparisons with a movie like Bahubali is natural in this case but the loud bravado is mostly missing and is replaced with the study of human ambition." Karthi plays the role of Aditha’s trusted lieutenant Vandiyathevan and it is through the eyes of this character that the audience is introduced to the world of 'Ponniyin Selvan'. New Delhi:After the grand success of the magnum-opus `Ponniyin Selvan 1`, the makers are all set to begin the post-production work for the second instalment of the film. Helmed by Mani Ratnam, the film stars south actors Vikram, Trisha Krishnan Karthik Sivakumar, Jayam Ravi and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the lead roles. The film has collected over Rs 300 crores gross worldwide in all languages. Talking about the second part, the makers are all set to begin the post-production work of the film which was shot simultaneously with `Ponniyin Selvan -1` unlike `Baahubali` and `KGF`. The film is all set to hit the theatres in the summer of 2023. The final release date of the film is still awaited. Before my kids watched the movie, I wanted to share my know-how of the characters… since there are many of them, and often related in multiple ways. The map has important locations in the story • Sundara Chola (actor Prakash Raj), the emperor is unwell, and stays within his palace in Thanjavur(check map) with his wife Vanavan Mahadevi. His father Arinjaya and uncle Gandaraditya (elder) are no more. Gandaraditya has a son Madhurantakar (actor Rahman) through his wife Sembiyan Mahadevi (actor Jayachitra). Usually, the elder son becomes king. But before he died, Gandaraditya passed on the kingdom to Sundara Chola (his younger brother’s son) and also said Sundara Chola’s sons should succeed him. He specifically said that his own son Madhurantakar should not become king, and made his wife promise. His wife Sembiyan Mahadevi brought up Madhurantakar as a Shiva bhakta and gave him no martial training. She wants Madhurantakar to stay away from the throne. Sundara Chola and many others look up to Sembiyan Mahadevi (a.k.a. Periya Piratti) for advice. Sundara Chola has 3 children as listed below. • Aditha Karikalan (actor Vikram) is Sundara Chola’s eldest son. Even the reason behind the name "Pooniyin Selvan" has to do with Oomai Rani. During Arulmozhi Varman's childhood, when the royal family sails through the river Cauvery, the prince falls into the river and gets rescued by an unknown female figure. People start believing that it's the river Ponni (another name for Cauvery) herself who has saved the little prince. Hence, he gets the name Ponniyin Selvan (The Son of Ponni). However, later through the accounts of Arulmozhi and Sundara Cholan, it is revealed that the unknown woman was Oomai Rani. Book vs film In the book, Oomai Rani's character development goes on for a few chapters, which has been shortened in the film to just two scenes. After Vallavarayan Vanthiyathevan and Alwaarkadiyan meet Arulmozhi Varman, the trio roams around Sri Lanka exploring the country. Oomai saves them from a falling building and another fatal accident during the time. Later, it is revealed to the readers that they were all assassination plots of Pandyas. Arumozhi reveals that Oomai has saved him from similar dangers in the past.
