‘Ponniyin Selvan’ by Mani Ratnam: release date, trailer, cast

This is one that South Indian film fans have been waiting for. After the massive success of the fantasy epic Baahubali film series, the new film in the same genre — making waves even before its release — is Ponniyin Selvan: I (Ponni's beloved), by acclaimed director Mani Ratnam. Made in the Tamil language, and based on writer Kalki’s epic five-part book series of the same name, the magnum opus is not only drawing comparisons to Baahubali, but also the Game of Thrones series, for its mix of history, action, romance, political intrigue, secrets, treachery and characters. What is 'Ponniyin Selvan: I' all about? The epic action drama is, unlike the pure fantasy stories of Game of Thrones or Baahubali, based on history, centred on the early days of Arulmozhivarman, a powerful Indian king who went on to become Rajaraja Chola I of the Chola empire. The Cholas were one of the longest-ruling world dynasties for almost 1,500 years between the 3rd century BC and 13th century AD. They were like the Mughals of the south and also a thalassocracy — empires that built and held power through maritime means — governing southern India and extending its political influence to South-East and East Asia. The book series by Kalki, the pen name of writer, poet and journalist Ramaswamy Krishnamurthy, came out between 1950 and 1955, more than 40 years before the release of A Song of Ice and Fire. The novels’ enduring popularity for more than 70 years — it is a best-seller even today — among Tamil re...

Karikalan’s Death to Mandakini’s Truth: Writer Kumaravel On Ponniyin Selvan 2 In 5 Scenes

The release of Ponniyin Selvan 2 tied up a lot of loose ends, and in the process, transported readers and non-readers of Kalki’s magnum opus into its world of complicated succession, hurt egos, grief and whirlwind romances. While PS-2— now out on Amazon Prime Video — stayed true to the fates of most characters in the book (including Kundavai and Vanthiyathevan’s romance, The most significant change in the film was that of Madhurantakan’s coronation. In the book, Madhurantakan and Nandini are twins and in fact Kumaravel, who co-wrote the screenplay along with Jeyamohan and Ratnam, feels it would’ve been confusing to take viewers through this strand of plot. “In the book, the babies are swapped and Sembiyan Mahadevi knows that her baby grows up away from her and yet lets it happen. Kalki established this in various instances. His explanation for switching Madhurantakan and Senthan Amudhan was that nobody would have seen both of them, so the people wouldn't realise it. But this wouldn't be apt to depict in the film.” In case they had included this in the film, it would’ve raised a big question in the minds of viewers, he says. "When you knew your baby was alive, why didn't you bring him to the kingdom?" And how does she accept a flower seller as a king?” Instead, the team stuck to depicting what unravelled In history. “In reality, it was because of Madhurantakan's upheaval that Sundara Chola (Prakash Raj) steps down and makes him the king. So we thought we could retain the sa...
