'Kavalthurai Ungal Nanban': Khaki

A still from Kavalthurai Ungal Nanban Tamil cinema, known for its brawny cop heroes and dramatic encounters, seems to have finally switched to the other side of the narrative. Although a recent trend, films have now started looking at police from a critical point of view. One such trendsetter was Vetri Maran’s 2015 film Visaranai, which portrayed the deep-rooted corruption in the police department. The film shows how the police implicate five innocent labourers in a crime which they did not commit. True to its title Visaranai, meaning interrogation in Tamil, has some of the gruesome scenes of custodial torture ever depicted in India cinema, enough to send shivers through one’s spine. Based on the book Lock Up, an autobiographical work by Coimbatore-based auto-rickshaw driver M Chandrakumar, the film was officially nominated for the Academy Awards. Related news: After a gap of five years, another film made on a similar theme has hit the theatres. Titled Kavalthurai Ungal Nanban (police is people’s friend) the film comes at a time when the state is recovering from the gory Santhankulam custodial deaths, where a father-son duo died days after being allegedly meted inhuman torture by police. Common man’s frustration Vs police ego The film starring VJ-turned-actor Suresh Ravi and Mime Gopi shows how a common man’s frustration with a recalcitrant law and order system lands him in the lockup. The film begins with the story of Prabhu, a graduate who works as a food delivery boy, a...

Vetri Maaran On Kavalthurai Ungal Nanban: There Is No Need for Songs to Portray Intimacy

Usually when a filmmaker makes his first film, he'd try to somehow complete the movie by adding a couple of song and dance numbers, even if the budget is low. So, for him to take such an approach for his first film is very challenging, because it could go either way. I wanted to appreciate the intention to make such a story. After the first 20 minutes of the film when the conflict starts, the antagonist happens to be a cop and the story moves forward with respect to that aspect. But for me, the depth was about how a person in authority would react if his ego is disturbed. It could've been set in a hospital where a dean is offended and goes to the extent of killing someone. This story could be set anywhere — there is a universality to it. The movie was shot in 28 days and has a few glitches too, but leaving out all of that, when I placed the ego factor in the police department, that thought seemed very scary to me. Vetri Maaran: With Visaranai , the whole film is about responding to a story that happens outside the film. Here, the characters themselves experience the story and we are watching that. Technically, this is the difference. Like you said, in Kavalthurai Ungal Nanban , it is about one person representing the corrupt system, but in Visaranai it was about the entire system being corrupt. This puts the ball into the individual's court. I also feel that the gap between the police and the people is increasing. At some point, the police have let it get wider and wider. ...

Kavalthurai Ungal Nanban Movie Review : Kavalthurai Ungal Nanban Movie Review Suresh Ravi Vetri Maaran Galatta

Kavalthurai Ungal Nanban sets a serious mood right from its opening, where we hear and see a man wailing in pain. The entire title credit sequence, aided by the wailing and the disturbing sound makes you prepared for the next 2 hours. The story revolves around the life of Prabhu (Suresh Ravi), a middle-class man working as a food delivery boy, which becomes problematic after an incident with the Police. Prabhu lives with his wife Indhu (Raveena Ravi), who is the breadwinner of the family. One fine day, Prabhu and Indhu are stopped by the patrol police in the night and when Prabhu is confronted by Police Inspector Kannabiran (Mime Gopi), he irks Prabhu and makes him lose his cool. As a result, Prabhu faces all the consequences and his future turns completely dark. The film depicts a brutally hard-hitting incident that talks about the abuse of power. Kavalthurai Ungal Nanban creates an impact in many places and you feel empathetic towards the protagonist when he faces one problem after another, constantly. After setting up the characters in the initial few minutes, debut director RDM storms into the story and takes us into a darker world. The serious confrontation scenes between Prabhu and Kannabiran have been neatly shot and those scenes capture the emotions of both the characters. As the film progresses and you get to see the visuals of the custodial violence, you cannot avoid recollecting the real-life Sathankulam incident that killed two innocent lives. The film sticks t...

Kavalthurai Ungal Nanban Movie Review: A harrowing account of how institutions of power abuse it

When Kavalthurai Ungal Nanban opens, we hear the wails of someone even as the warmly lit visuals give us a sense of a rundown place. And then we see the person — a young man. He is lying on a post, with his back bent like a U, and hands bound to his legs. If not for the wails and the post, you might think he's doing some advanced yoga! This is Prabhu (Suresh Ravi, solid), a food delivery person. He and his wife, Indu (Raveena Ravi, convincing), are living alone, having married against the wishes of her family. He is trying to go abroad and she is performing the role of the family’s main breadwinner until then. He manages to get the amount required to go abroad, also learns that his wife is pregnant. Things seem to be going right for the couple until they don't - in the course of one day! First, Indu is robbed and molested. And then, as they go to file a complaint with the police, Prabhu rubs off the cops the wrong way, and the inspector, Kannabiran (Mime Gopi, menacing), decides to make his life living hell. Like Vetri Maaran's Visaaranai, Kavalthurai Ungal Nanban is another harrowing account of how institutions of power abuse it to ruin the lives of those who cross them the wrong way. But unlike in Visaaranai, where you started caring for the protagonists right from the start because they were simpletons who had committed no wrong and yet meekly bore the violence unleashed on them, this one makes it a little tricky for us to wholeheartedly feel for Prabhu's plight... at l...
