Nigeria geography, maps, climate, environment and terrain from Nigeria

What is the terrain and geography like in Nigeria? Overview Nigeria's 356,669 square miles stretch across several climatic regions: a narrow coastal belt of mangrove swamps; a somewhat wider section of rolling hills and tropical rain forests; a still larger dry central plateau, with open woodlands and savanna; and a strip of semi-desert on the fringes of the Sahel. Lagos is located in the coastal belt and Abuja is in the central plateau. The country's major geographical features are the Niger and Benue Rivers. The two rivers form the upper arms of a flattened letter Y, coming together in the south-central part of the country, and proceed due south as the Niger River, fanning out into a large and intricate delta as the waters reach the Gulf of Guinea. Most of Nigeria's oil deposits are found in the Niger delta or in the coastal waters. The country's highest peaks are in the eastern highlands bordering Cameroon, with elevations up to 7,936 feet. The most extensive upland area is the Jos Plateau in east-central Nigeria, a region 2000 to 4000 feet above sea level with elevations up to 5841 feet. Geography - note the Niger enters the country in the northwest and flows southward through tropical rain forests and swamps to its delta in the Gulf of Guinea Climate Due to its size and diversity, Nigeria has different climate zones. In the coastal area, where Lagos is located, temperatures range from the mid-70s to the low 90s during most of the year. Rainfall is heaviest in this are...

Africa Map / Map of Africa

About 1.75 million years ago, early man spread throughout parts of Africa. They became aggressive hunters, lived in caves and used fire and their ability to create stone tools just to survive. The Neanderthals arose some 200,000 years ago and inhabited regions in northern Africa and across parts of southern Europe. There is also clear evidence that they had control of fire, lived in caves, as well as open-air structures of stone and vegetation. One of the most important developments of primitive man was the creation of stone tools. By 5000 BC farming was somewhat common in the northern areas of Africa, as people were growing crops and herding livestock. During that time the Sahara Desert was a fertile area. Ancient African History In 3200 BC the Egyptian culture emerged along the lower reaches of the Nile River; it was among the earliest civilizations and their tools and weapons were made of bronze. They also pioneered the building of massive pyramids and temples. Egyptians also developed mathematics, an innovative system of medicine, irrigation and agricultural production techniques, writing and the first ships. In short, the Egyptians left a lasting legacy upon the world. Around 600 BC the use of metal tools spread across small population bases and farming groups in North Africa, and their use gradually spread south into what is now called South Africa. The Phoenicians were an enterprising maritime trading culture from Lebanon who spread across the Mediterranean from 155...

Vegetation Zones in Nigeria

Specific Vegetation Zones in Nigeria Vegetation usually depends on the climate zones of the country. Vegetation belts in Nigeria reflect the tight link between the vegetation and the country’s climate: • Rainforest • Fresh Water Swamp • Sahel Savanna • Short Grass Savanna • Guinea Savanna • Woodland • Marginal Savanna • Mangrove • Montane • Sudan Savanna Below there is the map of Nigeria showing vegetation belts. Vegetation zones in Nigeria As mentioned in the Rainforest High-mountainous multi-tiered tropical forests have been preserved mainly along the right bank of the lower reaches of the River Niger and in the valley of the River Cross. Trees with a height of 40-45 m form the first upper tier. Such giants with powerful tree-shaped roots, diverging from the base of the trunk, are not afraid of the elemental forces of nature. Nigerian Rainforest The trees of the second and third tiers are especially densely strewn with epiphytes, intertwined with lianas that rush towards the sun. The rays of the sun almost do not penetrate through the dense green canopy formed by woody crowns. In the north of the forest zone the annual amount of precipitation does not exceed 1600 mm, the conditions for forest Guinea Savanna Almost half of the territory of Nigeria is occupied by a moist, so-called Guinean high-grass savanna. Precipitation pe year here is 1000-1400 mm on the average. The plots of these Guinea Savanna in Nigeria Groups of trees rise above the grassy sea: drought-resistant k...
