Improving prospects drive auto major Maruti Suzuki India's shares

Photograph: PTI Photo Demand for its new sports utility vehicles (SUVs) appears to be good, and the company has 4 lakh outstanding orders by April 2023, (up from 3.6 lakhs in January 2023). Siam (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers) estimates that passenger vehicle demand would grow by 5-7 per cent in the 2023-24 financial year (FY24) and MSIL is likely to beat the market growth. The company, which already has around 2.25 million capacity, intends to increase it by 1 million, with a capex of Rs 8,000 crore for FY24. It expects a rise in CNG vehicle orders after the latest government administered pricing mechanism (APM) price-setting which reduced fuel costs. The company expects improved chip supplies but there are still persistent supply issues which may impact the second half (H1) FY24 production. MSIL estimated loss of production of 38,000 units in the fourth quarter (Q4) and 46,000 in Q3 and overall 170,000 units in FY23, due to chip shortage. Lower rare earth metals prices and lower plastics and other petrochem related costs should lead to improved Ebitda (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation) margins despite steel prices hardening. However, there is strong competition in this space and, as and when, the new airbag mandate is implemented, there could also be additional costs. Associated Motor-ways Ltd. (AMW), the sole agent of Suzuki Maruti cars in Sri Lanka yesterday welcomed Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. Chairman R.C. Bhargava. Bhargava, an illustrious corporate personality in India joined Maruti Udyog Ltd. as Director Marketing soon after the company’s incorporation in 1981. He was appointed as the Managing Director/CEO in 1985 and became the Chairman and Managing Director in 1990. He was re-instated to the Board in 2003 after Suzuki acquired control of the company and became a listed company. Bhargava was appointed as the Chairman of the company in 2007, a position he continues to hold to date. Bhargava is on the Board of Directors of a number of leading companies in India including Grasim Industries, UltraTech Cement Company, Polaris Software Lab Ltd., Infrast-ructure and Financial Services Ltd., Dabur Indu-stries Ltd., Idea Cellular Ltd., Thomson Press Ltd., Kokoyu Camlin Ltd. and Taj Asia Ltd., and is on the India Advisory Boards of BAE Systems Ltd., Rio Tinto (India), Huawei India Ltd. and Hitachi India Ltd. Toyota and Suzuki to Deepen Collaboration in the Fields of Development and Production in India

Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) and Suzuki Motor Corporation (Suzuki) signed a memorandum of understanding for a business alliance in 2017. Since then, the two companies have been bringing together Toyota's strength in electrification technologies and Suzuki's strength in technologies for compact vehicles for joint collaboration in production and in the widespread popularization of electrified vehicles. Toyota and Suzuki are promoting mutual supply of vehicles globally, which is one of the collaborations in the business partnership, and the two companies will now start production of a new SUV model developed by Suzuki at Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd. (TKM) from August. Maruti Suzuki India Limited and TKM will market the new model in India as Suzuki and Toyota models, respectively. Furthermore, the two companies are planning to export the new model to markets outside India including Africa. The powertrains of the new model to be on sale in India, will be equipped with mild hybrid developed by Suzuki and strong hybrid developed by Toyota. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that India has targeted to be self-reliant in meeting its energy requirement in the next 25 years. He was addressing a gathering at Mahatma Mandir Convention Centre here to virtually lay foundation stones for an electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturing plant of Japanese automobile giant Suzuki Motor Corporation in Hansalpur, Gujarat and Maruti Suzuki’s vehicle manufacturing facility at Kharkhoda, Haryana, while also commemorating 40 years of Suzuki in India. “Friends, in the Amrit Kaal of next 25 years, it is our target that India become atmanirbhar (self-reliant) in meeting with its energy requirement. We know that a big chunk of energy consumption is associated with transport. And therefore, innovation and efforts in that direction must be our priority. I am confident that with cooperation from all of you and all the friends from auto sector, India will attain this target,” the Prime Minister said.
