An unconvincing new biography by S Irfan Habib glosses over Maulana Azad’s contradictions

Maulana Azad: A Life S Irfan Habib Aleph Book Company 318 pages Rs 899 It must be a hard job being a hagiographer. More than the historian’s primary preoccupation, “the controlled reconstruction of the past”, according to the British political and constitutional historian GR Elton, one requires the spin-doctor’s skill to do away with history’s messiness. One mustn’t allow inconvenient details to get in the way of strongly-held convictions. The historian S Irfan Habib’s conviction is that Maulana Azad was a great man whose ideas can serve as an ideological blueprint for us today. Habib, a brilliant historian who has held the Maulana Azad Chair at the National University of Educational Planning and Administration, clearly intended his slim volume to be a paean to his hero. But powerful tributes make for poor biographies. Take, for instance, Habib’s foreshortening of Azad’s early career as a pan-Islamist. It must be remembered that the secular icon was once upon a time not very secular. During and after World War I, Azad was above all concerned with imposing sharia on Indian Muslims, and crowning himself amir-i-hind, the juridical emperor of Muslim India. To this end, he preached jihad, ran secret societies, and liaised with revolutionaries in Afghanistan and the Ottoman Empire. Habib glosses over all of this, telling us instead that there was little more to Azad’s pan-Islamism than “unflinching anti-colonialism”. Habib is on much firmer ground, however, describing Azad’s you...

Maulana Azad: Founding Father of a Pluralist India, Remembered

• Irfan Habib “ Our present difficulties, unlike those of Europe, are not the creations of materialistic zealots but of religious fanatics .” Abul Kalam Azad M aulana Abul Kalam Azad was not only a frontline nationalist leader but also one of the architects of modern India. His commitment to the pluralist ethos of our freedom struggle is reflected in his profile as the first minister for education, science and culture in independent India. He constantly strived as a minister and as an intellectual to synthesize the Islamic, Indian and the Western ideas into a coherent and single pattern for the newly independent nation. He was one of the few leaders of the freedom movement who, steeped in medieval scholarship and classical learning, transcended the limits of different classical languages and religion. He castigated any kind of narrow outlook, expressed as cultural tradition, as national chauvinism or religious orthodoxy. Most scholars have concentrated on Azad’s political contributions, which are surely important or on his theological acumen as an Islamic scholar par excellence. However, we also need to acknowledge his immense contributions to nation building, particularly in education, science and culture. It is even more significant in the context of Islam today, not only in India but globally. In 1916, he explicitly asserted his having studied, over a period of a decade or so, the problem in its entirety, and claimed to have developed “a critical-cum-creative insight” 1...

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was a profound and rare Islamic scholar, writer, thinker, freedom fighter who promoted the idea of ‘universal humanism’. He was well versed in poetry, art and music besides having a flair for writing. He was a multi-faceted personality with a progressive outlook. Though he had a rationalist outlook, he was very well versed in Islamic lore and history. His view of Islam did not necessarily come into conflict with territorial nationalism, Pan-Islamism and anti-imperialism. In this sense, he had interpreted Islam from a rationalist perspective. Maulana Azad had given a clarion call to the Muslims to join hands with the Hindus to achieve the common goal of ending British rule and domination in India. In fact, he considered this as the duty of the Indian Muslims, because according to him Muslims were created not for despondency but for ‘hope’. As a revolutionary journalist the Maulana heralded a new era in Urdu journalism. His weekly ‘Al-Hilal’ grew in readership to such an extent that ultimately the British Government had to ban it. This chapter will analyse the thoughts, ideas and contribution of Maulana Azad to the freedom movement and nation-building in the post-independent India.
