Pharmaceutical form Metronidazole Oral Suspension is indicated in the prophylaxis and treatment of infections in which anaerobic bacteria have been identified or are suspected as the pathogen. Metronidazole Oral Suspension is active against a wide range of pathogenic micro-organisms, notably Trichomonas vaginalis, Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, Balantidium coli and other species of bacteroides, fusobacteria, eubacteria, clostridia, gardnerella vaginalis and anaerobic cocci. It is indicated in Adults, Children and Newborns with a gestation age of over 40 weeks for: • The treatment of septicaemia, bacteraemia, brain abscess, necrotising pneumonia, osteomyelitis, puerperal sepsis, pelvic abscess, pelvic cellulitis, peritonitis and post-operative wound infections from which one or more pathogenic anaerobes have been isolated. • The prevention of post-operative infections caused by anaerobic bacteria particularly species of bacteroides and anaerobic streptococci. It is important that your child takes this medicine in the way that your doctor has told you to so that it kills the harmful bacteria and gets rid of their infection. What is Metronidazole available as? • Tablets: 200 mg, 400 mg • Liquid medicine (suspension): 200 mg in 5 mL When should I give Metronidazole Metronidazole is usually given three times a day. This should be in the morning, early afternoon and at bedtime. Ideally, these times are at least 6 hours apart, for example 8 am, 2 pm and 8 pm. Give the medicine at about the same time(s) each day so that this becomes part of your child’s daily routine, which will help you to remember. How much should I give? Your doctor will work out the amount of Metronidazole (the dose) that is right for your child. The dose will be shown on the medicine label. Liquid medicine • Shake the medicine well. • Measure out the right amount using an oral syringe or a medicine spoon. You can get these from your pharmacist. Do not use a kitchen teaspoon as it will not give the right amount. When should the medicine start working? Your child should start to get better after taking the medicine for 2-3 days. Weigh out the metronidazole benzoate and place it in the mortar; triturate until finely powdered. Weigh out the glycerin and levigate the powder with a small amount of glycerin until a smooth paste forms. Add the remaining glycerin and the flavoring agent; then transfer the mixture to a calibrated bottle. Rinse the mortar with simple syrup and bring the final volume to 100 mL. Shake vigorously until the powder is evenly suspended. Use: Metronidazole benzoate oral suspension is commonly used to treat bacterial infections and intestinal parasites. Packaging: Package in a tight, light-resistant container. Store at controlled room temperature. Labeling: Keep out of reach of children. Keep refrigerated. Protect from light. Shake well.
