MG Motor on Friday officially revealed the pricing details of its Comet EV, which it launched in India at a starting price of ₹7.98 lakh (ex-showroom), doing so on April 26. Comet, which is MG's second electric car for the country (after 2020's ZS EV), will be available in three variants, the British auto giant announced. Comet, MG's second EV for India, made its debut in the country last week. MG Comet EV: Price The three variants have been named Pace, Play, and Plush. Of these, Plush is the standard trim, and it is this variant that is available for the ₹7.98 lakh starting price. Play, the middle trim, comes at a starting cost of ₹9.28 lakh (ex-showroom), while the top-spec Plus costs ₹9.98 lakh (ex-showroom). Also Read: It is to be noted, however, that these rates are introductory in nature, and will be applicable only to the first 500 bookings. MG Comet EV: Bookings According to MG, customers can book their Comet EV from 12 noon on May 15. Pre-bookings, however, began on Friday itself. Also, through its ‘Trace and Track’ app, the company aims to give buyers a unique experience to track the delivery status of their booking, starting right from the manufacturing facility. MG Comet EV: Delivery The carmaker will commence deliveries for Comet EV from May 22, and in a phased manner. Additionally, there is a buyback plan, under which MG is promising at least 60% of the car's value if sold after three years of ownership.

Egypt. Land of Pharaohs, land of antiquity. A place where the past and the present sit comfortably together side by side. And this is also true of its cars. Motoring happily alongside a bedraggled Mercedes W123 from the late ‘70s is a car that all but makes me jump out of my skin – it’s the soon-to-be-launched baby MG EV that was recently christened the Comet! One of a whole bunch of EVs imported to drive delegates of the COP 27 climate summit around, but without adding too much to their carbon footprint, it is a car that has me riveted. And what I particularly love is that it is cheeky, bold and off-the-future. A quick chat at the next set of traffic lights with the driver has me all excited and changing my flight plans. This is an opportunity too good to miss. The next day is consumed with making arrangements for our photographer, cameraperson and shoot locations. The plan isn’t exactly straightforward, and pulling this off will take some doing, but all the effort should be well worth it. The pyramids and sphinx will have to wait. MG Comet: exterior design, battery, powetrain Years ago, Nissan’s head of design Shiro Nakamura said something about EVs that just stuck. “Future EVs will still be cars, not featureless pods. Beautifully styled, full of attractive details, and good design would still play a massive role in their success,” he’d said to me. Walking up to the MG Comet, I can’t help but think how right he was. Far from being devoid of character, this little charmer...

• MG Comet likely to be priced from Rs 10 lakh • To be packed with latest on-board tech • Expected to go on sale mid-2023 As for the name, MG says it derives inspiration from the iconic 1934 British airplane which participated in the England-Australia MacRobertson Air Race – keeping alive its tradition of airplane-derived names. MG's MG Comet EV: exterior design, size The Comet will be unlike any other hatchback we’ve ever had in India – measuring just 2.9m long, the three-door, four-seater Comet will be the smallest four-wheeler on sale in India. It, however, won’t be quite as tight on space, as, thanks to its electric skateboard architecture, relatively long 2,010mm wheelbase, and boxy shape, interior packaging will be quite space-efficient. The India-spec Comet EV looks identical to the one that's sold in Indonesia. It gets a two-tone finish for the front fascia, a tall and stubby nose, and a wrapround strip under the windscreen with LED lighting elements that end in the wing mirrors. In profile, the small wheels pushed to the edges and the asymmetrical window line with dual-tone piant finish are what stand out, while the rear end has been designed to mimic the front fascia. MG Comet EV: will be feature packed Its compact dimensions may suggest it will be positioned as a budget vehicle, but it will be quite the opposite. We expect it to be priced upwards of Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom), positioned as a premium intra-city runabout, for which MG will certainly not be skimming...

Watch: MG Comet EV

The MG Comet was launched last month as the company's second all-electric offering, after the ZS EV. The Comet EV is quite unlike any other passenger vehicle on Indian roads at present, both because of its shape and styling as well as its overall dimensions. At a time when SUVs are quite the rage among buyers in the country, MG Motor India may have taken a big gamble to drive out this particular model. The MG Comet EV measures 2,974 mm in length, is 1,505 mm wide and stands 1,640 mm tall. It has a wheelbase of 2,010 mm. Obviously, here is an EV that can easily be referred to as a micro car. There may not be acres of space on the inside but a nicely done cabin - complete with an interplay of grey and white colour themes - lend the Comet a nice appeal from within. It isn't as if established small cars like a Maruti Suzuki Alto, Renault Kwid or even the enormously popular WagonR cannot negotiate the bylanes of Chandni Chowk and Paharganj. Some even venture into here with SUVs and come out unscathed. But what Comet EV brings to the fore is the sheer ease with which it manages to tread across the cluttered lanes and weave around the numerous obstacles - rickshaws, cart-pullers, dug-up roads and the likes. The Comet EV does not have a noticable road presence but in its extremely small proportions lie its inherent strength. Here is a city-bred, city-based EV that offers around 200 kms of range. The highways may be a trip too far but no narrow road or small parking space is too bi...
