In fact, one of the main attractions of Kanakapura is the Kalahalli village because of the beautiful Sri Venkateshwara temple that is popularly called Chikka Tirupati. Many devotees visit this temple every day and especially on the weekends. The original name of Kanakapura was Kanikaranahalli, and it was changed to Kanakanahalli later. Over the years, it was then renamed to Kanakapura. History says that the kings of Ganga, Chola and Hoysala dynasties ruled here. The history of the temple is exciting and the story goes like this — the head of the village had a dream one day and he was told to take the Lord Venkateshwara statue from the bottom of a pond nearby and donate it to the village. Thus, the idol was found and while carrying it the bullock cart broke at a particular place and it was believed that, that was the most suitable site for the temple. Every year in the month of February Sri Venkateshwara Brahma Rathotshava is held attracting a lot of travellers and pilgrims. If anyone wants to stay overnight they can stay in the temple or go to Kanakapura. There are decent hotels available for accommodation and good restaurants too.
