She will be fighting for more than just a crown and a title. It's a moment Monroe Lace will never forget. Earlier this year she was crowned Miss San Francisco. "It felt like a dream, because it's been a dream that I've had since I was a child," Lace explained. "Even though I am Miss San Francisco, I know my impact is much greater than that." Monroe is the first transgender woman in the Miss San Francisco pageant's 99 year history. The crown and sash are more than just accessories. "Every time I put on the sash, the weight of it reminds me of the weight of my job; of the responsibility I have to make a difference for young children," Monroe said. As part of her Miss San Francisco duties, Monroe visits...

Ms. vs Mrs. vs Miss: What's the Difference?

Ms. Ms. is the proper way to describe any woman, regardless of marital status. It’s a catch-all, neutral term that came about in the 1950s as women began to assert their desire to become known for something outside of their marriage, and took hold in the 1970s with the women’s rights movement. Ms. is pronounced mizz like quiz, not miss like kiss. It’s considered the female equivalent of Mr. and can be used in any setting to refer to an adult woman. Married women are often referred to as Ms. in a business setting where marital status isn’t known or seen as pertinent, but it’s most often used to describe women who aren’t married since Mrs. refers to married women and Miss relies heavily on age. If you’re not sure if a woman is married, or if she's divorced, it’s safe to go with Ms. If a woman is married, use Mrs. If you’re inviting a couple, it’s up to you if you want to refer to the names of each after their respective titles (Mr. John and Mrs. Jane Smith), or simply use both titles along with the husband’s name (Mr. and Mrs. Smith). The latter is more formal, but be cautious if you’re not sure if the woman decided to keep her name. If you’re only inviting a woman, and she’s married, use Mrs. The plural of Mrs. is Mesdames or Mmes., this comes from the French noun for Mrs., which is Madame. If you’re unsure and you don’t want to offend someone by giving her the wrong title, it’s perfectly polite to ask their preference for titles before using them in correspondence or in in...

Ms. vs. Mrs. vs. Miss

Ms. vs Mrs. – What’s the Difference Ms., Miss and Mrs. are three different ways to address women, normally as a title used before a surname. The words have very different contexts, however, and using them incorrectly can make your writing seem clumsy and even cause offense. • Mrs. is normally used as a title for a woman who is married, or who has been a married in the past. • Ms. is normally used as a title for a woman whose marital status is unknown. • Miss is normally used as a title for a woman who is unmarried, as well as female children, teenagers and students. In truth, these titles are disappearing from informal speech, and some major publishers do not use them at all unless it is a direct quotation. In writing, you will mostly come across the terms on official forms. Of course, they are used in certain professions, like teaching, and they are considered terms of respect. However, modern etiquette dictates that we should always be careful when using Mrs., Ms. and Miss. The golden rule of Mrs., Ms. and Miss? When you are unsure of a woman’s marital status, and the situation dictates that you must use a title, use Ms. For example, if you are writing a formal letter in business, you could address a female as Ms. Jones, Ms. Wallis etc. A couple of notes: • Miss does not have a period after it, whereas Mrs. and Ms. do. The period is retained in American English, but it is usually omitted in British English. • Miss, Mrs. and Ms. are always capitalized. • Mr. (Mister) is t...

Even if you never win, so many girls have gone on to use those connections for their careers." Jason Kempin/Getty Images Insider's Anneta Konstantinides previously reported that after "A lot of the girls felt like it was the organization's plan from the beginning for R'Bonney to win, no matter who else was competing," Miss Missouri, Mikala McGhee, told Insider. After winning the Miss Universe title on January 14, Gabriel told Insider that the allegations were a "huge distraction." "The hardest part was I felt like I didn't have a voice at times as Miss USA.
