Aishwarya Rai awed the audience at Miss World 1994 paegant finale's bikini round

Miss India 2010 Ushoshi Sengupta was in the news during the Miss Universe 2010 pageant for her national costume, a fusion attire inspired by India's national bird Peacock. Inspired by the bird, the designer deviated from the traditional lehenga choli and created a deep blue coloured dress with peacock wings.

So how did Sushmita manage to achieve this feat? Well, it was during the intelligence or the personality question and answer round, that the tables turned. Both Sushmita and Aishwarya were locked in a tie and it was their answers during the tie-breaker round that Sushmita managed to beat Aish to win the title (no offences meant). During the tie breaker round, Aishwarya was asked, "If you have to look for qualities in a husband, would you look for the qualities in Ridge Forrester from The Bold & Beautiful or in Mason Capwell from Santa Barbara?" Aishwarya picked Mason and replied, "Mason. They do have a lot in common, but from what we see, Mason has a very caring side to him, and a terrific sense of humour. And that really gels with my character." On the other hand, Sushmita was asked, "What do you know about the textile heritage of your country? How old has it been and what do you prefer to wear personally?" Sushmita's answer was, "I think it all started with Mahatma Gandhi's khadi. It has gone a long way since then, but the basics of Indian textile heritage has been from there." That was the answer that made Sushmita beat Aishwarya by a mere 0.2 percent. Both the ladies went on to represent India at Miss Universe and Miss World pageants and both the crowns came home that year!

10 Unforgettable Things about 1994 Miss Universe Pageant in Manila

This 2017, the Philippines plays host to the prestigious Miss Universe pageant for the third time. For a country obsessed with beauty contests, this is indeed a “major-major” event. The first time the Miss U was held in Manila was on July 21, 1974. This also marked the first time in the pageant's history that the coronation night was held in Asia. Before the Philippines takes the global center stage once again on January 30, 2017 let’s travel back 23 years and reminisce with great fondness the last time we hosted the event in 1994. During its staging, many considered the 1994 Miss Universe pageant the best in history—thanks to the superb production, topnotch delegates, and the incomparable electric enthusiasm of Pinoy pageant fans. Of the many reasons that made the 1994 edition a class act, 10 things stand out in making it truly unforgettable: • Miss Philippines Charlene Gonzalez’“High tide or low tide?” response in the interview competition. Who could forget Charlene’s excellent display of wit that wowed and made the crowd at the PICC go wild? The host, Bob Goen, fascinated by the many wonderful sites across the country that the contestants visited, asked Charlene how many islands are in the Philippines. Her response, “High tide or low tide?” became even more famous than eventual winner, Sushmita Sen’s answer to the final question. For years to come, “High tide or low tide?” remained part of Pinoy popular culture parodied and immortalized in local TV shows and movies. • 1...

Sushmita Sen Reveals What She Would Change in Her ‘Miss Universe’ Answer

Former Miss Universe Sushmita Sen opened up about her answer in the final round and said that she ‘didn’t know that much English back in the day’ and doesn’t know how she understood the question. In the last round, Sushmita was asked, “What for you is the essence of being a woman?” She had replied, “Just being a woman is a gift of God that all of us must appreciate. The origin of a child is a mother, who is a woman. She shows a man what caring, sharing and loving is all about. That’s the essence of being a woman." Sushmita recently gave an interview to a student at her daughter Alisah’s school for their school magazine. Talking about the last round, she said, “You know what I loved about that question and that answer as I've looked back at it for so many years is that they never asked what are the qualities of a woman or the attributes of a woman. They said, what is the essence of a woman?” Hindustan Times reported. “And I was from a Hindi medium school, so I did not know that much English back in the day. I don't know how I understood what essence meant and answered that question with such clarity and such experience, even though I lacked it 18, I think God sat on my tongue and said, let this be said because this is how you will choose to live your life. I stated that being born a woman is a great gift of God. I stand by that,” Sushmita Sen added. Sushmita Sen shared the magazine’s cover on Instagram and called it her ‘favourite interview’....
