Mithun Chakraborty Actor | Writer Born - June 16, 1947 in Barisal, Bangladesh Gourang Chakraborty, popularly known by his stage name Mithun Chakraborty, is one of the veteran actors of Indian films. He is also a singer, producer, writer, social worker, entrepreneur. He is also active in politics and is a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament. Chakraborty started his acting career in 1976 with the art-house drama Mrigayaa, for which he won his first National Film Award for Best Actor. Recognized as one of the best "dancing-heroes" in Bollywood, Chakraborty is famous for his "Disco and Desi" fusion-style dancing. The dance form was popular among the masses during the 70s and 80s. The actor is best remembered for his portrayal of Jimmy in the movie Disco Dancer which was a super hit movie not only in India but also in many other countries in the world, especially Russia. Mithun Chakraborty is one of the most popular actors in Russia. Mrigayaa (1976) Director: Mrinal Sen Cast: Mithun Chakraborty, Mamta Shankar Set in the ’30s, Mrigaaya starred Mithun Chakraborty as a tribal who is considered one of the finest hunters around, even by the British. From surviving on street food when he first came to then Bombay, Mithun - born as Gouranga Chakraborty - had had gone through his fair share of struggle. In the '70s he was a part of the Naxalite movement that saw young people protesting against the establishment and calling out the injustices meted out. In such a backdrop, his rise to fame is an inspiring journey filled with nothing but challenges. Chakraborty graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune in 1973 and it was after this that he was offered to play a young tribal named Ghinua in Sen's 'Mrigayaa'. Though the actor had already managed some brand recall in a few Bengali films, the journey to carve a place for himself in Hindi films was an arduous one. With no filmy connections to flaunt, this 1st-generation actor didn't know anyone when he landed in the city of tinsel dreams. He, also, didn't have a place to stay. For the longest time, the star, fondly called 'Mithun da' by his fans, would sleep on the top of water tanks situated on the terrace of buildings as he had no roof over his head.
