Let Parliament, country be aware of PM Modi's academic qualification: Sanjay Raut

Raut made the comments while talking to reporters in New Delhi, three days after the Gujarat High Court set aside an order of the Central Information Commission (CIC) asking the Gujarat University to provide information on PM Modi's degree to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Senior BJP leader and Maharashtra cabinet minister Chandrakant Patil hit back at Raut, saying he should observe restraint while speaking about the people holding top Constitutional posts like the prime minister. "Some codes need to be followed in politics and social and cultural spheres while making a public comment on a person holding the highest constitutional position. The level of allegations is going down," Patil said in Pune. While noting that both Kejriwal and the CIC were "absolutely casual" in their approach, the court had also observed there was "indiscriminate misuse" of the RTI Act in this case. Allowing the Gujarat University's appeal against the CIC order, Justice Biren Vaishnav also imposed a cost of Rs 25,000 on Kejriwal. Raut on Monday said, "Narendra Modi sold tea at a railway platform and did his MA in Entire Political Science. The degree is historic and revolutionary. Display his degree at the grand entrance of the new Parliament building built by Prime Minister Narendra Modi." "Let the entire Parliament and the country be aware of his education. What is the mystery behind it, why would one hide it," he said. Responding to a question seeking his opinion on the authenticity of t...

Why I am convinced Modi's degrees are fake

None less than two of the three most powerful persons in the present regime - BJP president Amit Shah and finance minister Arun Jaitley - have put in public domain the degrees of PM Modi. Despite BJP's attempt to put a cap on the building controversy and AAP's penchant for the politics of allegation and sensationalism, there is substance to the latter's suspicion over Modi's degrees. In Modi's BA marksheet, his name is shown as Narendra Kumar Damodardas Modi, while in Modi's BA and MA degrees, his name reads as "Narendra Damodardas Modi". This discrepancy wouldn't have raised an eyebrow if there was a corresponding change of name affadavit, but no such document has been made public. Now political science is a known discipline, but where does "entire" fit in? This suspicious name adds to the mystery surrounding his degrees. Also, it has been alleged that the college from which he obtained his MA has no political science course. Again, all this may amount to nothing, but like other instances, Modi's silence here is only making things look worse. Since Modi is the most prominent public figure in India today, it shouldn't have been difficult to find people who attended the course or took the exam with him. Even while attending normal courses, multiple acquaintances are made in college, but since Modi is a celebrity and the biggest one at that, hordes of batchmates should have come forward to confirm with pride that they attended a course with him. For any institute, it is a ma...

PM Modi degree case: Kejriwal seeks review of Gujarat HC's order, says degree not available on university website

Image Source : PTI PM Modi degree case: Kejriwal moves Gujarat HC PM Modi degree case: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has moved the Gujarat High Court seeking a review of its March order where it had set aside an order of the Central Information Commission (CIC) that had directed the varsity to “search for information” regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s degrees. Following a brief hearing on Friday, Justice Biren Vaishnav admitted Kejriwal's review petition and posted the matter for hearing on June 30. The High Court also issued a rule to the respondents, Gujarat University, Central government and former Chief Information Commissioner M Sridhar Acharyulu. PM Modi's degree is not available In his review petition, one of the key contentions raised by Kejriwal is that contrary to Gujarat University's claim that Modi's degree is available online, no such degree is available on the university's website. "While the court had recorded that PM Modi's degree is available on the varsity's website following submissions to that effect by Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta, representing the university, upon a scan of the said website...(it) is found that the said degree is not available, but a document referred to as OR (Office Register) is displayed," the review petition moved by Kejriwal said. Pointing that Mehta had only orally submitted on the day of the hearing, that too for the first time, that the degree is available on the website, Kejriwal has pleaded that ther...

PM Modi's Educational Degree Should Neither Be a National Shame Nor a State Secret

One of the standing clichés of my younger days was the two options a young male learner – male being critical here – would be offered by his aspirational and hungry-for-social-approval middle-class parents. The two options, as is known widely, were to become either an engineer or a doctor. But even those parents, closed to all other possibilities and unbending to the will of their ward, did not have the audacity or the imagination to ask their kids to aim for an entire engineering or entire medical degree. However, Gujarat University has issued a degree, ad-hominem , in ‘Entire Political Science’ to one Narendra Modi, who holds, de-facto, the most important office in the government. PM Modi's educational degrees made public by Shri — BJP (@BJP4India) More than a prefix There is no subject known as ‘entire’ political science or ‘entire’ anything, as anyone with the minimal exposure to education would know. But the university has so far refrained from issuing either a corrigendum to or a revision of this case of seeming duplicity. And whenever there has been a move to get some clarity on the matter, Gujarat’s courts have stonewalled it. Also read: In any modern polity, this should raise not one but hundreds of eyebrows and it did too, since it came to light a few years ago. But the issue is about more than the mere matter of a prefix. Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal recently क्या देश को ये जानने का भी अधिकार नहीं है कि उनके PM कितना पढ़े हैं? कोर्ट में इन्होंने डिग्री द...

Modi degree plea: Curiosity not public interest; RTI used for childish jabs, HC told

• • • • Modi degree plea: Curiosity not public interest; RTI used for childish jabs, HC told Modi degree plea: Curiosity not public interest; RTI used for childish jabs, HC told According to Mehta, merely because the Prime Minister was holding a high office, does not mean it is of public interest. When there is no public activity involved, Mehta questioned if universities can be compelled to disclose degrees. Opposing a Central Information Commission (CIC) order directing the Gujarat University (GU) to find information regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s degrees, the varsity told the Gujarat High Court Thursday that curiosity cannot be equated with public interest. Appearing on behalf of GU for the first time as its advocate (important to mention as he was not appearing as SG), Solicitor General Tushar Mehta emphasised before the court to allow the university’s plea “with cost”. “Otherwise, we will be doing a great disservice to the (RTI) Act. The (RTI) Act is intended for something else, and it is being used for something else. It is being used for settling scores, used for childish jabs, that is not the purpose of it,” he argued. He also objected to being directed to divulge a degree under “the RTI Act for any of our (GU) students”. The court of Justice Biren Vaishnav reserved the order in the petition filed by GU challenging the April 2016 order in which CIC directed the varsity to In 2016, the GU had, through its registrar, filed a petition before the HC challengi...

Delhi CM asks for review of Gujarat HC ruling, says PM Modi's degree not on university's website

Express News Service AHMEDABAD: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has petitioned the Gujarat High Court to review its March decision, which allowed a Gujarat University appeal and nullified and overturned a Central Information Commission (CIC) directive ordering the university to "search for information" regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's degrees. On Friday, the complaint was admitted by the court of Justice Biren Vaishnav and issued a rule to the respondents, Gujarat University, the Union of India, the Chief Information Commissioner, and Professor M Sridhar Acharyulu, who was the CIC commissioner at the time the order was made. While the court had noted that PM Modi's degree is available on the university's website in response to arguments made to that effect by Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta, attorney for the university, "upon a scan of the said website.. is found that the said 'degree' is not available, but a document referred to as OR (Office Register) is displayed," according to the review petition filed by Kejriwal. ALSO READ | The petition notes that even the aforementioned OR "appears to be cryptic and without any seal or signatures of the authority," making it "impossible" to verify it. In his appeal, Kejriwal contends that the display of "degree" on the university's official website is one of the key and preliminary grounds for demanding a review of the court's earlier decision. Because the degree is not available on the website, the judgment "s...

Two Degrees of Separation: The Controversy Over Modi’s Educational Qualifications Explained

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a file photo. Credit: PTI Update, May 1, 2016: The controversy over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s educational qualifications taken centre-stage once again after the Central Information Commission (CIC), acting at the behest of a RTI application by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, directed the Prime Minister’s Office to provide ‘specific roll number and year’ of the prime minister’s degrees from Delhi University (DU) and Gujarat University (GU). The CIC said that this would help them locate Modi’s records easily, following which the universities could provide relevant information about his degrees to the public. The debate over Modi’s educational qualifications started last year after various RTI applications seeking details about his degrees were refused by the universities and the PMO. This had led to suspicion among Modi’s political opponents that he may have provided wrong information in his election affidavits. His election affidavits mention that he finished his undergraduate degree through a distance learning programme from DU in 1978 and his MA from GU in 1983. The debate has fuelled yet another spat between Aam Aadmi Party leader Kejriwal and the BJP machinery. When did this controversy erupt? Why was the PMO reticent in providing information about Modi’s degrees? And what could be it political fallout? The Wire breaks it down. Neither the constitution nor the Representation of the People Act specify minimum educational qualifi...

Kejriwal moves Gujarat HC seeking review of its order on PM Modi's degree

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal.(HT_PRINT) One of the key contentions raised by Kejriwal is that contrary to Gujarat University's claim that Modi's degree is available online, no such degree is available on the university's website. Following a brief hearing on Friday, Justice Biren Vaishnav admitted Kejriwal's review petition and kept it for further hearing on June 30. The HC issued a rule to the Gujarat University, Central government and former Chief Information Commissioner M Sridhar Acharyulu. In March, Justice Vaishnav had allowed Gujarat University's appeal against the CIC order and had also imposed a cost of ₹25,000 on Kejriwal. Also Read: In April 2016, then CIC Acharyulu had directed Delhi University and Gujarat University to provide information to Kejriwal on Modi's degrees. The CIC order had come a day after Kejriwal wrote to Acharyulu saying he has no objection to government records about him being made public. Kejriwal, in the letter, had wondered why the commission wanted to “hide” information on Modi's educational qualifications. Based on the letter, Acharyulu directed Gujarat University to give records of Modi's educational qualifications to Kejriwal. The Gujarat University had objected to the CIC's order saying "irresponsible childish curiosity" of someone cannot become public interest under the Right to Information (RTI) Act. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the university, had told the HC in February there was nothing to hide in the fir...
