Motorola Edge 30 Ultra review: a genuine Galaxy S22 alternative

I've found using Motorola's Edge 30 Ultra to be a general joy from start to finish, thanks to a generally great main camera (focus issues ignored anyway), stacks of power on tap, and a curve-edge screen that, while it won't be for everyone, does give the device added visual flair. It'll make for a solid Samsung Galaxy S22 alternative for many given the very fair asking price. I've been using the Edge 30 Ultra over a four-week period as my own handset as I type this. Various product launches (hi there Overall, without spoiling absolutely everything up front, the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra is a surprise success too. There are some foibles that hold it back from perfection, sure, but if you're looking for something that's larger-scale than a (Image credit: Future / Mike Lowe) When Motorola launched its first Edge smartphone back in the middle of 2020, I always thought the whole idea behind the name was to do with its curve-edge screen. The follow-up handset rubbished that idea, though. But for the Edge 30 Ultra the curve screen is back, pride of place, which gives the handset a striking look. Sure, not everyone is going to love a screen with curved edges. It can heighten the likelihood of accidental touches, and the contrast fall-off to the screen's edges is also more pronounced than you'll find with a flat screen. Not that I've found either of those things to be a major burden with the Edge 30 Ultra. If anything I prefer having a screen with curved glass. It doesn't only look be...

Extra smooth 6.67-inch OLED display The Edge 30 Ultra outdoes the competition in at least one aspect of its display capabilities and it's refresh rate - as is common with fancier Motos, this one supports up to 144Hz refresh rate, while non-gaming alternatives are almost universally capped at 120Hz. Dubbed 'Endless Edge Display', the curved OLED panel measures 6.67 inches in diagonal and has a 1,080x2,400px resolution (20:9 aspect, 394ppi density). Motorola mentions a peak brightness of 1250nits, and we gather that's for small patches of white in HDR applications. In our standardized testing, we got a maximum brightness of 1047 nits with the adaptive toggle turned on and the phone in bright ambient conditions. We'd call that an excellent value and one that only Samsung's latest can beat by a meaningful margin. The 499nits we got when operating the slider manually are more or less par for the course. Motorola Edge 30 Ultra review: talkin' bout a resolution

200MP. Count ’em. Two hundred. That’s a lot of megapixels. The hero of the new Edge 30 line-up, the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra, has one of the most densely-packed camera sensors around. It isn’t a one-trick pony, either: there’s Qualcomm’s newest silicon inside, along with lightning-fast charging and a super-high refresh rate display. Oh, and it’s drop-dead gorgeous. Beyond the headline specs, the Edge 30 Ultra is essentially an iterative update on last year’s Edge 30 Pro. It’s also known as the X30 Pro in China, where it launched earlier this year. But that doesn’t stop Motorola from earning top marks on the design front. A blend of frosted glass and sand-blasted aluminium gives the Edge 30 Ultra a premium appearance, enhanced by a curved screen that melts into the metal. It feels every bit as expensive as it looks, with the etched Moto logo adding some much-needed grip to the back surface. At 199g it’s reassuringly weighty, and the rounded sides sit comfortably in your hand. The visual changes from last year’s model are concentrated around the rear camera bump, which gives the 200MP sensor pride of place; the two secondary snappers sit underneath, inside a metal island in the top left corner. You could call it a little business-like, but we reckon it’s more purposeful than the curvy cutout seen on the Edge 30 Pro. Other upgrades include an in-display fingerprint sensor, as opposed to having the power button perform double duty. It’s as speedy as any rival at recognising your...

Motorola Edge 30 Ultra vs Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra: What is the difference?
