What is an mRNA vaccine?

What is an mRNA vaccine Introduction Hi, my name is Kate Mullane. I'm an infectious disease physician at the University of Chicago, and I've been working on the vaccines against COVID. The first two vaccines approved for early use by the FDA to fight SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, are both mRNA vaccines. While they are the first messenger RNA vaccines to be approved for widespread use in the US, mRNA vaccines aren't actually that new. The vaccine platform was initially developed in the early 1990s, in an effort to create safe and effective vaccines in a pandemic situation. mRNA vaccines have been developed for other diseases like rabies, Ebola, and Zika, and a large-scale influenza trial was carried out in humans from 1993 to 1996. Over the past 10 years, researchers have been improving messenger RNA vaccine effectiveness. Thanks to billions of dollars in global funding and thousands of scientists and physicians working for months, we've been able to fit years of research and analysis into just 10 months, without skipping any regulatory or testing steps to development of the COVID-19 vaccine. How vaccines work Most vaccines work by presenting your body with a weakened or dead version of a virus or some of the proteins found on the surface of the virus. By showing the virus or parts of the virus to your immune system, the vaccine teaches your body to recognize the pathogen and turns on production of antibodies, which are proteins that attach to the virus and al...

What Adults Need to Know About the New RSV Vaccines

June 9, 2023 – After nearly 60 years of effort, vaccine protection against the potentially lethal respiratory infection respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, is finally a reality. The FDA approved two new RSV vaccines: GSK’s Arexvy on May 3, and Pfizer’s Abrysvo on May 31. Both approvals are for adults ages 60 and above, who are among the most vulnerable to the infection. If the CDC recommends the vaccines – a decision that's expected after its Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices meets June 21 and gives its recommendation – both vaccines could be available by fall, ahead of the RSV season. The new vaccines are “a wonderful advance,” said William Schaffner, MD, an infectious disease specialist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, and medical director of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases. Yet he and other experts wonder if Americans have so much “vaccine fatigue” that they will pass up the shot – especially since it is expected to be offered at the same time as the annual influenza vaccine and an updated COVID-19 booster. Awareness about the disease itself is another issue that may thwart the vaccine effort, as even some doctors mistakenly think of RSV as solely a pediatric danger, other experts said. RSV Danger for Older Adults, Children RSV is a contagious virus, spread via virus droplets, direct contact with the virus, or touching a surface with the virus on it, causing lower respiratory infections. It can occur in all age groups but...

MR Immunization

Strategy:Achieve and maintain at least 95% vaccination coverage with two doses of measles and rubella containing vaccines within each district of each country in the Region, through routine and/or supplementary immunization. Progress:As of December 2021, children in all eleven countries have access to two-doses of measles containing vaccine (MCV) and at least one dose of rubella-containing vaccine in routine immunization. The coverage of first dose of measles containing vaccine across the Region has shown a significant decline from 94% in 2019 to 88% in 2020 and the coverage for second dose of measles containing vaccine declined from 83% in 2019 to 78% in 2020. Similarly, the coverage of rubella containing vaccine declined from 93% in 2019 to 87% in 2020. All countries have conducted a supplementary immunization activity (SIA) using measles and rubella containing vaccine to close the immunity gap due to sub-optimal coverage in routine immunization. An estimated 550 million additional children have been reached through SIA with measles containing vaccine between 2013 and 2020, approximately 98% of the targeted for the period.

Adult MMR Vaccine: Advantages, Side Effects, Guidelines

When should adults get the MMR vaccine? The CDC says most adults born in 1957 or later should get at least one dose of the MMR vaccine. Because of the risk of birth defects, all women of childbearing age should have the MMR vaccine unless they're pregnant or have proof of immunity, or proof of already being vaccinated for rubella. The CDC says adults at greater risk of measles or mumps should get two doses of MMR vaccine, the second one 4 weeks after the first. This includes adults who: • Have been exposed to measles or mumps or live in an area where an outbreak has happened • Are students in colleges or trade schools • Travel internationally • Work in health care For measles, the CDC advises a second dose for adults who: • Were previously given a vaccine made with "killed" measles (instead of the live-type of vaccine used today) • Were given an MMR vaccine between 1963 and 1967, but there's no record of what type. Exceptions: Who does not need the MMR vaccine? Adults don't need the MMR vaccine if: • They have proof of vaccination already. • They have proof that they've already had measles or mumps and rubella. Who should not have the MMR vaccine? Adults who should not have the MMR vaccine include people in these groups: Pregnancy. Pregnant women should not get the MMR vaccine due to risks to the baby. Women who get the MMR vaccine should wait 4 weeks Life-threatening allergic reactions. Adults who have had a life-threatening Medical conditions. Adults should talk with the...

Health and partners gear up for mass MR vaccine roll out

Health and partners gear up for mass MR vaccine roll out – 19 th July to 19 th August In its efforts to address gaps in the Measles and Rubella (MR) vaccination coverage affected by the recent COVID-19 pandemic, The Ministry of Health and Medical Services with support from partners is gearing up for a nation-wide mass MR vaccination campaign for ALL children 6 to 59 months old across the country ahead of 19 th July when the national roll out will commence. In 2021, immunization coverage for measles was only 69 percent for one dose and only 39 percent for two doses in 2021. Additionally, two dose measles coverage has continued to be sub-optimal in the country. In 2020, the two dose measles coverage was only 51 percent. Given these rates (51%) of the measles coverage, the country is not safe from future outbreak of the Measles and therefore points to the need to scale up its efforts to ensure that the MR vaccination coverage hits the expected target of to 95% in order to interrupt transmission of the virus and prevent return of large outbreaks which is the primary goal of the microplanning workshop as part of preparation for the mass roll out. An integrated approach to the mass MR vaccination will be conducted which will include administration of Vitamin A as well as COVID-19 vaccines for children 12 years and above. As part of preparations a micro planning workshop was held last week where all Expanded Programme of Immunization (EPI) and health promotion Officers from all p...
