A well-known Indian politician and government official, Mulayam Singh Yadav was born on November 22, 1939, in Saifai, Etawah district, India. A citation said Dr. Dilip Mahalanabis popularised the use of Oral Rehydration Solution while serving at a refugee camp during the 1971 Bangladesh War. Mr. Yadav, a socialist leader who passed away last year, was the founder of the Samajwadi Party and served thrice as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain and veteran politician S.M. Krishna, who quit the Congress to join the Bharatiya Janata Party in Karnataka in 2017, were among those selected for the Padma Vibhushan. A wrestler-turned-teacher, Mulayam, who was born on November 22, 1939, in Etawah, completed his MA (political science) and B.Ed degrees. He was elected as an MLA for the first time from Etawah’s Jaswantnagar in 1967 as a Samyukt Socialist Party (SSP) candidate, but lost the election in 1969 to the Congress’s Bishambhar Singh Yadav. Ahead of the1974 mid-term polls, Mulayam joined Chaudhary Charan Singh’s Bharatiya Kranti Dal (BKD) and won Jaswantnagar seat on its ticket. He again won from this seat in 1977 on the Janata Party ticket. In the Ram Naresh Yadav government in late 1970s, he was co-operative and animal husbandry minister. In the 1980 polls, when the Congress bounced back, Mulayam lost his seat to the Congress’ Balram Singh Yadav. He later switched to the Lok Dal and was elected to the state Legislative Council as its candidate and also became the Opposition leader. In the 1985 Assembly elections, Mulayam was elected on the Lok Dal’s ticket from Jaswantnagar and became Leader of the Opposition. Born to Murti Devi and Sughar Singh on 22 November 1939 in Saifai village of Uttar Pradesh's Etawah district, Mulayam founded the Samajwadi Party in 1992 and served for three terms as chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. He first became the chief minister in 1989, serving till 91, then from 1993 to 95 and 2003 to 2007. He also served as the defence minister in the United Front government at the Centre from 1996 to 1998. In the early 1960s, when Mulayam was in his 20s, Nathu Singh, the Socialist Party MLA from Jaswant Nagar in Etawah, came to visit a wrestling tournament in the neighbouring Mainpuri district. Impressed by a short but sturdy Mulayam's wrestling skills and his ability to defeat stronger opponents, Singh asked to meet the young wrestler. Finding out that the young man was also educated and was teaching at a local college, Singh took him under his wing and became his political guru. Thus began the long political journey of Mulayam Singh Yadav. In the coming Assembly election of 1967, Singh stepped aside and got his young protege to contest the polls from Jaswant Nagar. Padma Vibhushan To Mulayam Singh Yadav A Mockery Of His Stature, Contributions: Party Leader

Lucknow: By conferring the Padma Vibhushan on Mulayam Singh Yadav, the government has made a mockery of his stature and contributions to the country, Samajwadi Party leader Swami Prasad Maurya said today. He and other party leaders demanded that the Samajwadi Party founder be conferred the Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian award. Mr Yadav was conferred the Padma Vibhushan, the country's second highest civilian honour, posthumously on Wednesday. Reacting to the award, Samajwadi Party MLA SP Maurya tweeted in Hindi, "By giving Padma Vibhushan posthumously to Netaji Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav, the Government of India has made a mockery of Netaji's stature, work and contributions to the nation. If Netaji had to be respected then he should have been honoured with Bharat Ratna." Similar views were expressed by party spokesperson IP Singh.
