Now, Mumbai has an app for traffic updates

A Crash Analysis Center will be set up in a month’s time at the Traffic Training Institute where even the smallest accident will be analysed. The Mumbai Traffic Police Tuesday announced several measures, including cashless e-challan (fine) system and 200 digital billboards, to provide live traffic updates to motorists. The initiatives were announced at the launch of the Mumbai Police Traffic App that motorists can download on cellphones for interaction with the police and real-time updates on traffic. “We launched the App to ensure more communication between the public and the traffic police. Traffic in Mumbai concerns all and we can stay connected faster,” said Vitthal Jadhav, ACP (Traffic). Officials said the App would be linked to “The electronic challan system will do away with cash collection and is expected to be implemented in three to four months. Offenders will have to pay using debit or credit cards, and can make online payments using cellphones. There will be no cash collection. If someone insists on paying cash, it will have to be at the nearest traffic chowky in the presence of senior officials,” said JCP (Traffic) Milind Bharambe. He added that digital billboards would be installed to give information about traffic congestion, road repair and the time a motorist would take to reach important landmarks from the location of the billboard.

Mumbai Traffic Police launches App : Real time traffic updates

Traffic has been a crucial part of every Mumbaikar.Spending 2 hours in traffic per day is quite normal for daily commuters, thats like 44 hours per month (considering 22 working days) ,which means 2 days per month spent in traffic! Finally Mumbai traffic police has taken a commendable effort and developed this real time traffic guide. It relies on 1700 GPS-fitted taxis moving around mumbai.Based on the movement of these cabs the app can predict whether the traffic on a particular route is slow moving, jammed or normal. Quite a logical effort must say and best part is that this will be a free app. Times of India team tested it over few routes and found it to be fairly accurate.Fitting GPS on more taxis will make the app more accurate. Here is a detailed report - ( 4) Thanks The App has already been released its fairly raw and needs a lot of improvement. Downloaded it for my iPhone today its called Traffline. I'd rather use Traffic feature available on Google Maps which is far more reliable than this. This is the what Google traffic showed when I was in the middle of a traffic jam that lasted for more than 20 minutes yesterday ( Location : Hosur road near E.City, Bangalore) . I believe the service is at its nascent stage and it would take some time for it to be reliable. -- Wind It relies on 1700 GPS-fitted taxis moving around mumbai. I always fantasized about a system like this. However, are GPS-fitted radio-taxis the best choice? Radio taxis (the type you call and reserve) ty...

Mumbai: Truck Overturns On Aarey Flyover, Causing Massive Traffic Disruption On WEH

On Wednesday morning, Mumbaikars traveling via the Western Express Highway (WEH) faced significant disruptions as a truck overturned on the Aarey flyover. The incident occurred around 8 am and may have been caused by the vehicle skidding on the rain-soaked road, resulting in slippery conditions. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. However, it took the authorities approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes to clear the truck and restore normal traffic flow. Mumbai Traffic Police (MTP) confirmed the removal of the truck and the resumption of smooth traffic at 9:41 am through a tweet. Due to the prolonged halt of vehicles for 1 hour and 40 minutes, a substantial backlog of traffic had already accumulated. The incident occurred during the peak hours between 7 am to 11 am, when the number of vehicles on the road is particularly high. Unfortunately, no traffic diversions were in place during this period, exacerbating the congestion on the Western Express Highway. Traffic Congestion and Route Bottlenecks After the truck was cleared, traffic resumed but at a slow pace. Multiple routes on the Western Express Highway experienced congestion, including the Jogeshwari Flyover, Link Road, Aarey Flyover, and Dahisar Flyover, among others. To avoid the congestion on WEH, some motorists opted to travel below the road in Goregaon East, resulting in yet another bottleneck in that area.
