Mumbai weather update: Relief from heat? Pre

MUMBAI: In what may come as a relief to Mumbaikars from heat and humidity, as Mumbai approaches June 11 -the official onset date of the south-west monsoon-independent and private meteorologists suggest the city can expect pre-monsoon thundershowers in the coming week. Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has not made an official statement yet on this year's monsoon arrival date, as it is awaiting the onset of rains over Kerala first. South-west monsoon normally sets in over Kerala around June 1. This year, though, IMD has said monsoon is likely to arrive in Kerala by June 4 with a model error of four days. There is also a possibility of a low-pressure system forming over the Arabian sea around June 5-6, with some experts saying it could develop into a cyclone. If this happens, it might cause a delay in the official onset of the season in the city. It may be recalled that in June 2020, Cyclone Nisarg had delayed the monsoon's arrival by four days to June 15. Rajesh Kapadia, who runs private weather forecasting blog Vagaries of the Weather, said, "In Mumbai, pre-monsoon evening showers are possible from June 7-8. However, the proper monsoon season may set in around June 14-15 as per the current scenario. A fresh monsoon vortex is expected around June 3. Once formed, it will strengthen into a depression. However, this may also cause further progress of the monsoon upwards from Karnataka to get delayed." Kapadia said the months of June and July are expected to...
