AHMEDABAD: Brace for higher taxes, every year! Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation ( Thennarasan placed his budget proposal of Rs 8,400 crore before the standing committee of the AMC on Tuesday. The budget plan is Rs 289 crore higher than last year's. He has also proposed an environmental improvement charge (EIC) - another first - which is estimated to range from Rs 5 for residential units smaller than 50 square metres to Rs 3,000 for units greater than 500 square metres. For commercial units, this charge may range between Rs 150 and Rs 7,000 per annum. The AMC commissioner has also proposed doubling door-to-door garbage collection charges per household such that it totals Rs 120 crore an annum, compared to Rs 107 crore last year. It has proposed to double solid waste user charge from Re 1 per day per household to Rs 2. After model roads, municipal commissioner M Thennarasan has committed to provide five iconic roads, nine new flyovers, 40 smart parking zones where you can pay and book parking space in advance. Thenaressan has also promised two working women's hostels and seven 'She-Lounges' where women can breastfeed.

Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner Lochan Sehra has been transferred and appointed as Joint Secretary of In-Space for five years or until further orders. Sehra has not completed a year as AMC commissioner, being appointed in December last. The Appointment Committee of Cabinet issued the orders on Sunday. Senior bureaucrat Ajay Bhadoo has been appointed as Deputy Election Commissioner. Bhadoo, a 1999 batch IAS officer of Gujarat cadre, was joint secretary in the President’s secretariat. As many as 35 civil servants from different services have been appointed as joint secretaries in the central government departments as part of the reshuffle. There are five Gujarat cadre officers. Ravi Kumar Arora has been appointed as Joint Secretary in Ministry of Urban Affairs, Ajay Kumar as Joint Secretary in MoD and Franklin Khobung has been transferred to Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Ministry. Who will be AMC commissioner? As soon as news of the transfer of Lochan Sehra came, there was talk about who will be the next AMC chief. Sources said M Thennarasan who is MD GIDC or Rajkumar Beniwal, currently commissioner municipalities administration, are forerunners for the coveted post. Thenna-rasan, who was SMC commissioner, has also worked in AMC as dy municipal commissioner, while Beniwal has experience of administration of municipalities. AM

The Gujarat government Friday transferred seven IAS officers, including those heading the Urban Development and Urban Housing departments, along with the Municipal Commissioner of Ahmedabad. Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s commissioner Mukesh Kumar was transferred as Principal Secretary, Urban Development and Urban Housing Department, a notification from the General Administration Department said. Kumar is a 1996-batch IAS officer. Kumar will be replaced by Lochan Sehra, a 2002-batch IAS officer and Secretary (Housing and Nirmal Gujarat), in the Urban Development and Urban Housing department. A 1988-batch officer, Puri has been appointed as the Managing Director of the Vadodara-based Gujarat State Fertilizers Company Ltd. Till Friday, Puri was holding the additional charge of the post.
