Munugode assembly seat: Telangana set to witness high

For, the by-election in this backward constituency in Nalgonda district is crucial for all the three major parties in the state - the ruling TRS, opposition BJP and the Congress. The TRS, recently renamed as Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS), aims to demonstrate its dominance in state politics and go national with a big win here. The message the K Chandrasekhar Rao-led party would like to send at the national level - it can take on the BJP and win. A loss in the bypoll would hamper not only its national plans but also embolden the opposition ahead of the Assembly polls. The BJP, meanwhile, hopes to give a push to its plans to emerge as the alternative to BJP with a victory in Munugode. The party is on a high following its victories in Dubbak and Huzurabad Assembly bypolls and also the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) election during the last two years. Even if it ends up as the runner-up behind the TRS, it can still claim to be the main opposition, leaving the Congress to the third spot. For the beleaguered grand old party, it is almost a do or die battle in view of its below par performances in the 2014 and 2018 Assembly elections and the subsequent bypolls. If Congress loses, it would be a double whammy for the party as Munugode was its sitting seat. There is a Left aspect to the contest as well, with the CPI and CPI (M) announcing support to the TRS and actively campaigning for the ruling party's victory. The total number of eligible voters in the predominantly-...

In Munugode, KCR sets sights on 2023 polls

By Express News Service HYDERABAD: Probably with the 2023 Assembly elections in mind, Chief Minister and TRS supremo K Chandrasekhar Rao on Saturday appealed to the Communist Party of India (CPI) and other progressive forces to join him in not just the Munugode byelection but also in future battles to defeat the BJP at all levels. “This fight will not end in one day. Our unity should continue from Munugode to Delhi. Until the lives of the poor and farmers get better, progressive forces like the CPI, CPM and others should work together,” Rao said in a clear appeal to the Left parties. Possibly to counter former Munugode MLA Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy’s claims that the Chief Minister would release funds to the poll-bound constituency, Rao did not make any new announcement and neither did he announce the party candidate for the by-election. The Munugode byelection preparation meeting -- Praja Deevena Sabha -- was more like a precursor to the next general election campaign as the TRS supremo appealed to the people to send a strong message to the BJP-led Union government by once again electing TRS candidate in the byelection to take the TRS count to 104 in the Legislative Assembly. Addressing the well-attended gathering, the TRS chief devoted a major part of his speech to criticising the Central government on its failures and misgovernance. Munugode bypoll result 2022: TRS wins fierce battle with BJP, Congress loses deposit

In all seven mandals, the TRS maintained the lead, but only in Choutuppal Mandal BJP had shown the lead in the second rounds of the third rounds. Congress stood a distant third, losing the sitting seat and deposits. Congress candidate Palvayi Sravanti got 23,906 votes which fell short of one-sixth of the polled votes, due to which she lost security deposits with the Election Commission of India. TRS has got 43 per cent, BJP 38.3 per cent and Congress 10.5 per cent of total valid polled votes. The difference of vote percentage between TRS and BJP is 4.5 per cent. Political analysts believe the TRS has won due to intense micro and macro poll management, chief minister KCR's welfare schemes like Rythu Bandhu, Aasara Pensions and alliance with Communist Parties CPI and CPM. However, BJP candidate Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy's image helped him put up a tough fight in addition to the strength of the BJP in youth voters. The BJP failed to get as many votes as anticipated in Choutuppal and Chandur municipal areas. Munugode went for bypolls on November 3 following the resignation of MLA K Rajagopal Reddy, who quit Congress and joined BJP. Around 93.1 per cent of voting has been recorded in Munugode, of 2.4 lakh electors, which is an unprecedented voter turn-out in Telangana. Of five byelections in Telangana after the 2018 general polls, the TRS won three and BJP won two. On the other hand, Congress lost all the elections and lost deposits in three bypolls.
