Munugode Byelection Results: TRS beats back BJP to bag Munugode byelection; Congress bites dust

HYDERABAD: The TRS won the fiercely contested Munugode by-election with a healthy majority of more than 10,000 votes on Sunday. However, the TRS government's welfare schemes and its alliance with the Left parties helped it nose ahead of an increasingly aggressive BJP. Even as celebrations broke out in the TRS camp, BJP was not looking at the result as a total loss. Until now, BJP had little presence in the southern part of the state, having restricted it to north Telangana. Also, with Congress finishing a poor third in the fight, BJP has firmly established itself as the main opposition in Telangana. The Grand Old Party's candidate, Palvai Sravanti, got just 23,906 and lost the security deposit. This despite Raj Gopal winning the seat in 2018 on a Congress ticket amid a TRS wave. TRS, on the other hand got 43% of the vote share while BJP finished with 38.3%. Congress 10.5% of total valid polled votes. In the 2018 assembly elections, BJP's vote share was just 6.4% in Munugode, with its candidate, Gangidi Manohar Reddy, receiving 12...
