Netflix’s ‘Murder in a Courtroom’: The story of criminal Akku Yadav and the women of Kasturba Nagar

A group of women wielding cleavers and knives, stuffing chilli powder in a napkin and storming a Nagpur court to kill a dreaded criminal before the judiciary can give a judgment. This is a scene from Netflix’s new Indian Predator: Murder in a Courtroom docuseries, which draws inspiration from a real-life incident. Directed by Who was Akku Yadav? Bharat alias Akku Kalicharan Yadav was a gangster in Nagpur during the 1980s and 1990s. According to the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative Report (CHRI) published in 2005, at the time of his death, Yadav had been charged in 26 criminal cases. He belonged to a family of milkmen, and a report in the Marathi newspaper Loksatta states that after his tryst with petty crimes, Yadav became involved in serious criminal activities in 1991, including gangrape, murder, armed robbery, housebreakings, criminal intimidation and extortion. Nidhi Salian, Creative Producer and Head of Research on the Netflix series, told Yadav was arrested in 1999 and detained for a year under the Maharashtra Preventive Detention Law (Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Slumlords, Bootleggers, Drug Offenders and Dangerous Persons Act, 1981). His detention order was quashed in 2000. In January 2004, he was banned from entering Nagpur City and Rural under the Bombay Police Act, 1951, though Yadav did not follow the order. • • • • The third instalment of the Indian Predator documentary series titled “Murder in the Courtroom” is all set to release on 28th October on Netflix. Directed by Umesh Vinayak Kulkarni, the new season would focus on the apparent lynching of serial rapist, killer, and extortionist Akku Yadav in a Nagpur district court. The recently released The Story Behind Indian Predator 3 Murder In A Courtroom Born as Bharat Kalicharan in the early 1970s, Akku Yadav grew up around the Kasturba Nagar slum that lay on the outskirts of Nagpur. According to police reports, the slum not only housed minor criminals but also two rival gangs. “A child of the neighbourhood, Akku had graduated from milkman’s son to local menace,” Killing Justice: Vigilantism in Nagpur. Yadav and his gang committed crimes like rape, murder, home invasion, and extortion in Kasturba Nagar for 13 years until his death. Yadav tried to create a small business empire; he extorted money, harming and threatening those who resisted him. During his life as a criminal, Yadav murdered at least three individuals and raped over 40 women and girls. In his lifetime, Yadav had been arrested nearly 14 times by the Nagpur Police. Married couple found dead in Newhaven named as man due in court charged with murder

A married couple found dead in their home in Newhaven have been named. 33-year-old Josh Bashford and a 30-year-old Chloe Bashford were discovered at a house in Lewes Road on Friday night. Derek Martin, 64, also known as Derek Glenn, of Moulsecoomb Way, Brighton, has been charged with two counts of murder and is due to appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
