Chance Meeting Episode 1 of My Perfect Stranger begins with a man driving in the middle of the rain. One thing after another goes wrong; the weather, a broken cell phone and the satnav going crazy, This is Yoon Hae-joon, and he suddenly slams on the brakes on the road. Braving the rain, he comes across a tunnel ahead, with an abandoned car and some strange instructions inside for a time machine. As someone who has worked in press for the last 7 years, dealing only with facts, it seems way too fantastical for Hae-joon to handle. Only… there’s something he didn’t account for. Human curiosity. It’s shaping up to be an intense ride for our time-traveling leads who find themselves in the past, each with their own strong motivations to change the future. EPISODES 1-2 After two episodes, I’m already hooked. The drama dives right in without wasting time, but it doesn’t feel rushed. Pieces of our characters’ lives and the mystery are revealed at a good pace – so far, it seems like the type of drama that keeps you on your toes without dragging things out unnecessarily. But what really grabbed me was how emotionally grounded the story feels. While this is a crime mystery/thriller with a lot of ground to cover, our characters’ unique motivations and fears are given center stage. We’re first introduced to reporter YOON HAE-JOON ( Kim Dong-wook) who almost crashes into an old, abandoned car sitting right in the middle of an empty road on a rainy night. Thankfully, he’s got help in the form of our high school returnee who gathers information of her own. The two are starting to recognize just how entangled they are as they slowly open up to each other and find their goals might not be so different. EPISODES 5-6 We dive back in with Hae-joon trying to locate Joo-young, who’s gone missing. Yoon-young correctly predicts from the manuscript that they’ll find the teacher unharmed near the river. Sure enough, Joo-young is huddled by the river bank and suspiciously screams, “It wasn’t me!” in a panic when they approach her. She then acts like she didn’t just freak out and says she was merely lost, refusing to admit someone was after her even when Hae-joon spots a man in a blue hat lurking nearby. There’s nothing more they can do with Joo-young insisting everything is fine, so Hae-joon and Yoon-young head to the teahouse to finally exchange intel. Yoon-young shows him Mi-sook’s manuscript, a story future Mi-sook calls a “confession of sorts” about a crime too perfect to keep secret.
