Farmer producer organisations are coming in a big way in India: Nabard chairman

Nabard chairman G R Chintala on Monday said that farmers producer organisations (FPO) are coming in a big way in India and will immensely help them in getting a good price. Speaking at a webinar organised by BCCI, Chintala said that FPOs is the new paradigm in Indian farming. There are nearly 10,000 FPOs in the country today out of which 5000 have been promoted by Nabard. Water reservoir levels comfortable, except in the south Chintala said that of the 5000 FPOs promoted by Nabard, 2500 of them have gone into investment grade. “These investment grade FPOs are getting money from the banking system and Nabkisan Finance”, the Nabard chairman added. He said some of them have also started value addition by making finished products like lentils. These finished products are being now sourced by big retailers. The Nabard chief said due to the formation of these organisations, milk production has also gone up. Regarding accessing markets by farmers, he said these FPOs are also arranging pick-up vans to take the produce to the selling points. Chintala said West Bengal should also look into the success stories of FPOs and should actively promote them. Since West Bengal has primarily small and marginal farmers while productivity is very high, FPOs will become a viable option. Andhra Pradesh: NABARD chairman bats for sustainable farming

Integrated farming, use of appropriate farm implements, coping with climate change and regeneration of soil will play a key role in agriculture in future, said National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) Chairman G.R. Chintala. Integrated farming methods with financial and technical assistance from NABARD have yielded good results in drought-hit Bundelkhand , Ladakh and Dharwad, Dr. Chintala said, adding that strawberry cultivation in Bundelkhand had yielded good results for farmers. Dr. Chintala was addressing a workshop on ‘Agriculture — Prospects and Retrospect’ held by Chaitanya Godavari Grameena Bank. Chairman of CGGB T. Kameswara Rao was present. Stating that sweeping changes were taking place in the farm sector, Dr. Chintala said that farmers had to battle climate change and unpredictable market conditions. “Farming can be made more resourceful and productive if the farmers adapt themselves to the changing conditions. Integrated farming is one where farmers can experiment with different crops, use appropriate farm implements to cut down on the huge cost of farm labour and use advanced technologies. NABARD names K V Shaji as Chairman

K V Shaji has been named Chairman of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD). He formerly served as NABARD’s Deputy Managing Director (DMD) till May 21, 2020. He is an agricultural graduate with a PGDM in Public Policy from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Ahmedabad. Prior to joining NABARD, he spent 26 years in various roles at Canara Bank. In Canara Bank’s corporate office, he was in charge of strategy, planning, and business development. He also played a role in the merger of Syndicate Bank and Canara Bank. He previously worked for the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and Kerala Gramin Bank, the country’s largest regional rural bank. From 2013 until 2017, he served as the Chairman of Kerala Grameen Bank. Shaji KV is a Thiruvananthapuram native.

Bridge gap between agri research and farmers: Nabard chairman

CHENNAI: There is an urgent need to bridge the gap between agriculture research and the “A lot of innovative research is taking place in the field of agriculture, but the farmers should be aware of them. It’s high time we bridged the gap between research and farmers,” he said, while speaking at a function organized by the National Agro Foundation (NAF) in Chennai on Thursday. He said information and communication technologies (ICT) such as block chain technologies could be effectively used not only to improve the quality of agri produce but also to promote export. He emphasized that agencies like NAF with a nationalistic outlook should play key roles in bridging the research – extension gap and see to that the farmer gets benefited with adequate information, linkages and support as a package in toto. Chintala said India has great potential for boosting productivity and being a leader in global exports of agriculture produce. “Focus must be on development of environmentally sensitive cultivars and management practices, and market driven production systems,” he said. A presentation on KANCHI (Kisan Advancement through CasHless Innovation), an innovative digital platform for Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) developed by NAF was made to the chairman, NABARD. He said innovations like KANCHI should be scaled up. He visited the ISO certified Comprehensive Soil Health Diagnostic Centre and Food Safety and Quality lab of NAF at Taramani.

NABARD chairman met CM Jagan

A delegation of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) led by its chairman Shaji K. V. met Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy on Saturday. On the occasion, Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy said he was grateful to the NABARD for its support to the State government in implementing various schemes in the education, health and agriculture sectors. Karimnagar: National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) chairman GR Chintala urged the cooperative banks in States to replicate the Telangana Cooperative Bank model in the computerisation of the Primary Agriculture Cooperative Societies (PACS). Appreciating the Telangana State Cooperative Bank for digitisation of all the banks and the PACSs and emerging as role model in the country to ensure transparency and accountability, the NABARD chairman urged all the State cooperative banks to replicate the Telangana model for effective functioning and strengthening of PACS. The NABARD chairman was participating as chief guest at the National Federation of State Cooperative Banks Limited (NAFSCOB) board of directors meeting in a virtual mode from Mumbai on Friday.
