Broadly speaking, this was not a single case, but a series of cases that involved new characters as it unfolded over time. Sankaralingam Nambi Narayanan, the former top Indian space scientist who was arrested and tortured in 1994 after allegations he sold space program secrets to Pakistan, has finally had his name cleared and his treatment condemned by the highest court in India. On 14 September, the Supreme Court of India announced its conclusion that the original case against Narayanan was concocted and awarded him 5 million rupees (roughly $70,000) in compensation. The entire prosecution initiated by the Kerala state police was malicious and caused tremendous harassment and immeasurable anguish to Narayanan, the court said. It also ordered the creation of a committee headed by a former Supreme Court judge to take action against the police officials whose actions led to the spying imbroglio. Narayanan and others accused in the episode were declared innocent by a local court in 1996, but a spate of litigation on the matter followed over the next 2 decades. By Munish Chandra Pandey: Two months after the Supreme Court ordered CBI to investigate the ISRO espionage case in which scientist Nambi Narayanan was wrongfully arrested, the CBI has filed an FIR. Former Kerala Police chief Sibi Mathew, former Intelligence Bureau Deputy Director RB Sreekumar and 16 other police personnel have been named in the FIR over an alleged conspiracy to frame scientist Nambi Narayanan in the 1994 espionage case. The Supreme Court had on September 14, 2018 appointed a three-member panel headed by its former judge DK Jain and also directed the Kerala government to pay Rs 50 lakh compensation for compelling Nambi Narayanan to undergo "immense humiliation" in the false espionage case. The panel submitted its report to the Supreme Court in April 2021. The court had then ordered the CBI to act against the errant officials behind the 1994 case. Scientist Nambi Narayanan was accused of selling state secrets like confidential test data from rocket and satellite launches. He was arrested in December 1994 and charged with espionage.
