How L.A. became the most overcrowded place in the U.S.

The virus first struck Leonardo Miranda, who rented a shed and shared the kitchen, bathroom and dining room in the main house. It spread to a man who slept on three red cushions in the laundry room. Then to a grandfather and grandson who wedged two mattresses into one room. By the time COVID-19 was finished with the three-bedroom home, shared by eight, Miranda and the grandfather were dead. Miranda’s death in January 2021 would become part of a calamitous pattern. Los Angeles’ most overcrowded neighborhoods have experienced COVID-19 death rates that are at least twice as high as those with ample housing. This public health disaster was the inevitable consequence of more than a century of decisions that resulted in L.A. growing more like an endless suburb than a towering city. At the heart of the storied metropolis of single-family-home sprawl, L.A. leaders created a cruel paradox: It is also the country’s most crowded place to live. (Gary Coronado / Los Angeles Times) More homes are overcrowded in Los Angeles than in any other large U.S. county, a Times analysis of census data found — a situation that has endured for three decades, with no sign of abating. In places like the Pico-Union neighborhood, where Miranda lived, generations of families squeeze into tiny apartments. Construction workers, seamstresses and dishwashers live in close quarters. Day laborers bunk with half a dozen or more strangers in living spaces intended for one or two people. Within these confines, CO...

Crowded Places

1. Activate students' prior knowledge about crowded and uncrowded places. Ask students if they have ever been to a place that's very crowded. Ask: What was it like? How did it make you feel? Then repeat the discussion for uncrowded places. 2. Ask students to use the worksheet to categorize their favorite places as crowded or uncrowded. Distribute a blank Three-Column Chart to each student. Have students write in three heads: Favorite Place, Crowded or Uncrowded, and Reason. Then have students list some of their favorite places, write whether these places are crowded or uncrowded, and why they think so. Make sure students give examples of both indoor and outdoor spaces, such as cities, wilderness areas, parks, or supermarkets. Invite volunteers to share their answers. 3. Brainstorm possible reasons for crowding. Ask students to brainstorm a list of reasons why some places are very crowded. They may give answers such as fun, small, or crowded on weekends. Then ask: Why do you think some parts of the state are more crowded than others? What about parts of the country? What about the world? Write students' responses on the board. 4. Brainstorm good and bad things about living in a crowded place. Ask: What is good about living in a crowded place? What is bad? Draw a Venn diagram on the board and list all student responses. Encourage students to think about how they get around (car, train), where their families buy food (supermarkets), how far they live from the school, and more...

Agoraphobia

Overview Agoraphobia (ag-uh-ruh-FOE-be-uh) is a type of anxiety disorder. Agoraphobia involves fearing and avoiding places or situations that might cause panic and feelings of being trapped, helpless or embarrassed. You may fear an actual or upcoming situation. For example, you may fear using public transportation, being in open or enclosed spaces, standing in line, or being in a crowd. The anxiety is caused by fear that there's no easy way to escape or get help if the anxiety gets overwhelming. You may avoid situations because of fears such as getting lost, falling, or having diarrhea and not being able to get to a bathroom. Most people who have agoraphobia develop it after having one or more panic attacks, causing them to worry about having another attack. They then avoid the places where it may happen again. Agoraphobia often results in having a hard time feeling safe in any public place, especially where crowds gather and in locations that are not familiar. You may feel that you need a companion, such as a family member or friend, to go with you to public places. The fear can be so overwhelming that you may feel you can't leave your home. Agoraphobia treatment can be challenging because it means confronting your fears. But with proper treatment — usually a form of therapy called cognitive behavioral therapy and medicines — you can escape the trap of agoraphobia and live a more enjoyable life. Symptoms Typical agoraphobia symptoms include fear of: • Leaving home alone. ...

After a successful career of almost 30 years in the catering-hospitality industry, Paris and his team know exactly how to serve unique gastronomic creations made from high quality materials. Apart from fresh fish and homemade appetizers, you can also enjoy local grilled meat and Greek traditional cooked dishes of excellent flavor. We went there for our second night in sithonia. After eating the food and meeting the very kind stuffs we didn't want to eat anywhere else and went there three nights in a row. Firstly the food is amazing and the prices are not high for the dishes. the owner, the elderly guy who runs all the time was a very sweet and kind person. And for the last but not the least our waiter Yorgo was the best guy we met in sithonia. He helped us a lot with the food and also with the que. Since we are two, if it wasn't for him, we would have waited so long. But we didn't because of him. Highly recomended place.
