The Kashmir schedule of Thalapathy Vijay-starrer Leo, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, has been completed recently. Production company Seven Screen Studios released a video in which the crew talked about their experience working in Kashmir. After this, the next schedule will start in Chennai soon. Lokesh Kanagaraj’s last film was Vikram starring Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi and Fahad Faasil. The movie, apart from becoming a huge hit, also gave birth to a shared universe that fans have come to call the Lokesh Cinematic Universe, which includes Kamal Haasan-starrer Vikram as well as the Karthi’s Kaithi. Is Leo going to be part of the Lokesh Cinematic Universe or a standalone film. Fans have identified small details hinting that Leo could be a part of the shared universe. George Maryan, who played a police constable named Napoleon in Kaithi, was present during the puja ceremony of Leo. Actress Vasanthi, who played the role of Agent Tina in Vikram, was also present with the film crew when they went to Kashmir. This has led fans to believe that Leo might be part of the Lokesh Cinematic Universe. Also, fans have come up with an interesting meme video. • • • • Among the major highlights of Vikram was the appearance of Kaithi and thus establishing a connecting universe between the Kamal Haasan and Karthi-starrers. With the debate around Vikram on social media high, director Lokesh Kanagaraj sat down for an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Twitter on Wednesday where he invited fans to pose their queries about Vikram using the hashtag #AskDirLokesh. In that light, one Twitter user asked the Master director how Arjun Das' character was alive in Vikram after he died in Kaithi, with the filmmaker responding that the character Anbu's jaw was broken by Kaithi 2. Kaithi is Lokesh Kanagaraj's follow-up to the superb Maanagaram, and the writer-director continues where he left off. Once again, we have a focussed narrative without songs — but with borrowed film songs. If a character from the earlier film was from Trichy, the city is where this entire film is set in. Both films take place over the course of a single night. But most importantly, we have the cross-hatched structure — the screenplay is so precisely split between various narrative threads that it's impossible to see where the writing stops and where the editing begins. Are we witnessing the birth of an auteur? I'd say we'll have to wait a while. Because Kaithi is a much more (intentionally) dumbed-down movie. Lokesh gives away everything in the set-up. The plot is about cops and druglords and a huge consignment of cocaine. We know not just that there are moles on both sides, but also who these moles are. We see bounty hunters and an older version of the Hollywood trope of a rookie cop (named Napoleon and played by an excellent George Maryan) — and he's surrounded by a bunch of hapless engineering students. We know that a little girl in a destitute home is waiting for an "important person" who will come in the morning, and, of course, we know this important person (Dilli, played by Karthi) is the prisoner the film is named after.
