Coming soon: $3 movie tickets on Sept. 3 as part of National Cinema Day – The Virginian

For one day, movie tickets will be just $3 in the vast majority of American theaters as part of a newly launched “National Cinema Day” to lure moviegoers during a quiet spell at the box office. The Cinema Foundation, a nonprofit arm of the National Association of Theater Owners, on Sunday announced that Sept. 3 will be a nationwide discount day in more than 3,000 theaters and on more than 30,000 screens. Major chains, including AMC and Regal Cinemas, are participating, as are all major film studios. In participating theaters, tickets will be no more than $3 for every showing, in every format. Labor Day weekend is traditionally one of the slowest weekends in theaters. This year, the August lull has been especially acute for exhibitors. Cineworld, which owns Regal Cinemas, cited the scant supply of major new releases in its recent plans to fill for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. But, if successful, National Cinema Day could flood theaters with moviegoers and potentially prompt them to return in the fall. Before each showing, ticket buyers will be shown a sizzle reel of upcoming films from A24, Amazon Studios, Disney, Focus Features, Lionsgate, Neon, Paramount, Sony Pictures Classics, Sony, United Artists Releasing, Universal, and Warner Bros. “After this summer’s record-breaking return to cinemas, we wanted to do something to celebrate moviegoing,” said Jackie Brenneman, Cinema Foundation president, in a statement. “We’re doing it by offering a ‘thank you’ to the moviegoers that made...

For one day only, more than 3,000 movie theaters across the US will offer a ticket to any movie or screening for $3 or less. There are around 40,700 movie screens in the US, and at least 30,000 of them will be participating. The day — during Labor Day weekend — is typically slow at movie theaters and is expected to be especially slow this year, as the only major release that weekend is a re-release: an extended version of "Spider-Man: No Way Home." It reflects the lack of major movies in theaters after a promising summer; the next surefire hit likely isn't until "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" in November. National Cinema Day is Sept. 3: Here’s where you can pay just $3 for a movie ticket.

Worried about potential catches or small print? We’ve got all the details of the day for you. Does the $3 ticket only cover certain times? Nope. The $3 ticket price will extend to all screenings on Sept. 3. So you won’t have to worry about catching a matinee or late night show. (Note that you’ll have to pay any tax and fees on top of that $3.) Can I see an IMAX film for $3? You can. Prices won’t fluctuate with format, so if the film is showing at your local cineplex (and that theater is participating in National Cinema Day), then you’ll pay just $3. Which theaters will offer the $3 movie tickets? More than 3,000 theaters with over 30,000 screens are expected to participate in the event, including major chains such as AMC and Regal. The best way to find the nearest theater to you is via the Are there any major film releases this weekend? While it’s a holiday weekend, there aren’t any tentpole releases on Sept. 2. New films include Gigi & Nate, Burial and Honk for Jesus, Save Your Soul. That said, there are still plenty of summer blockbusters in theaters, including Minions: The Rise of Gru. And several films are being reissued, including Jaws and Spider-Man: No Way Home. Can I expect any deals at the concession stand? Don’t hold your breath. Cinemas make most of their money from the sale of popcorn and sodas. So they’re counting on making up any lost revenue from ticket sales with a busier than usual concession business. © 2023 Fortune Media IP Limited. All Rights Reserved. ...
