Honey trapping: Coimbatore cybercrime police arrest seven

The arrested were identified as A Afzal Rahman (24) of Mumbai, V Vignesh Veeramani (25) from Villupuram, and remaining R Karnan (24), S Tamilarasan (23), A Manikandan (22), M Jayasurya Pandian (25) and S Premkumar (33) all from Pollachi in Coimbatore. They were employed by Afzal Rahman and operated out of a apartment in Sector 19, Ulwe in Navi Mumbai. According to police, a 21-year-old college student in Coimbatore saw an advertisement for partners on a website on October 15, 2022, and contacted the number mentioned in the advertisement. A person, who introduced himself as Kumar, assured him to arrange escort and massage services at a hotel in Coimbatore city. Then the student was made to pay Rs 7.84 lakh on various occasions towards advance, room service, safety arrangement, etc. Finally, he realised that he was cheated and upset over the loss, complained to the City Cybercrime police. Based on his complaint a case was booked under sections 420 IPC and 66D of the IT Act. During investigation, police retrieved the banking details to which the youth sent money, the mobile number from which the scammers contacted him, the website through which they lured and IP detail. Cybercrime police traced the whereabouts of the scammers at Navi Mumbai a month ago and the police busted the gang two days ago. Navi Mumbai Man Arrested For Using Aurangzeb's Picture On Social Media Profile

Mumbai: An FIR was registered by Navi Mumbai police against a man for allegedly using Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's image as his Whatsapp profile picture after the issue was raised by a Hindu organisation, an official said on Sunday. Police arrested the man in Vashi, who works in an outlet of a mobile service provider. He was allowed to go and a notice was issued to him. The screenshot of Aurangzeb's profile picture was submitted to the police by a Hindu organisation, leading to registration of the case under sections 298 (Uttering words, etc, with deliberate intent to wound religious feelings) and 153-A (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence) of the Indian Penal Code, the official said. Further investigation is underway, he added. Incidents of communal tension have taken place in various cities of Maharashtra recently over the alleged glorification of Aurangzeb and Tipu Sultan. In Kolhapur city, protesters pelted stones during a demonstration against the alleged use of Tipu Sultan's image along with an objectionable audio message as social media “status” by a few locals on Wednesday. Earlier, photos of Aurangzeb were displayed in a procession in Ahmednagar. In Sangamner town, stones were hurled during a rally of Sakal Hindu Samaj in response to the alleged murder of a boy. Two persons were injured and five vehicles were damaged.

Coimbatore city police bust Navi Mumbai

In a major operation, personnel attached to the cybercrime station of Coimbatore City Police busted a Navi Mumbai-based gang that had been cheating people on the pretext of offering flesh trade through a dating website. The police on Friday arrested seven members of the gang, who operated from an apartment building at Ulwe in Navi Mumbai, and seized 34 mobile phones, 36 sim cards, 19 debit cards, 12 bank passbooks, four cheque books, router and electronic gadgets. The accused — A. Afzal Rahman (24), R. Karnan (24), S. Tamilarasan (23), A. Manikandan (22), M. Jeyasurya Pandian (25), V. Vignesh Veeramani (25) and S. Premkumar (33) — told other residents of the apartment that they were into import and export business. The police brought the seven men to Coimbatore after producing them before a court in Navi Mumbai and obtaining transit warrants. They were produced before a magistrate in Coimbatore on Sunday and were sent to judicial remand. The cybercrime police were on the lookout for the accused after a college student from Coimbatore lodged a complaint against them in October 2022. According to the police, the complainant searched for female escort and massage services on dating website Locanto. He contacted a mobile number found in one of the advertisements that claimed of arranging women for flesh trade.
