Rakesh Asthana Takes Charge As NCB Narcotics Control Bureau Chief

New Delhi: IPS officer Rakesh Asthana Thursday took charge as the chief of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), officials said. The 1984-batch Gujarat cadre officer has been appointed as the Director General (DG) of the NCB in an "additional" capacity. He is already serving as the DG of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). The Appointments Committee of Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as per an order issued by the Union home ministry Wednesday, had approved for "entrustment of the additional charge of the post of Director General Narcotics Control Bureau" to Rakesh Asthana for next six months or till a new incumbent is appointed. The post of NCB chief was lying vacant since July 4 after incumbent Abhay was appointed as Director of Hyderabad-based Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy. Rakesh Asthana, who was second in command in the CBI, was transferred as DG BCAS after a bitter tug of war with the then chief of the investigation agency Alok Verma. He had strongly denied all the allegations and had claimed that he was charged because of a complaint he made against Alok Verma. At the NCB, the officer is expected to review and initiate quality operations to crack on the narcotics smuggling, nexus of drugs mafia and couriers and money laundering crimes in the wake of the Union government's stress to act against such instances.

Meet Sameer Wankhede, top NCB officer behind the Mumbai cruise drugs bust

By India Today Web Desk: The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has been in the limelight since it began its probe into the so-called “drugs angle” in the case of actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death. The elite investigative agency once again made headlines on Sunday when it raided a cruise ship off the coast of Mumbai and apprehended several high-profile persons for being in possession of banned narcotics. Heading the operation was the NCB’s zonal director Sameer Wankhede, a man with a mission to rid the Maximum City of drugs. WHO IS SAMEER WANKHEDE? Sameer Wankhede, 40, is a Mumbaikar by birth. His father was a police officer, while his wife is Marathi actor Kranti Redkar. The two tied the knot in 2017. A 2004 batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, Wankhede has served as Deputy Commissioner of Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) and Additional SP of National Investigation Agency (NIA) before his stint with the NCB. A self-confessed fan of Bollywood movies and cricket, he, however, never let that cloud his judgment in the line of duty. In fact, during his first posting as the deputy customs commissioner at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, he dealt with several film stars and cricketers who tried to evade customs duties and fines, make off with undeclared purchases, and threw tantrums. “The celebrities used to create a scene,” Wankhede had said in an earlier interview to India Today. “They would threaten that they would complain to my on-duty senior but when I to...
