Game on! Which way will 2022 presidential election sway

By Rahul Shrivastava: This is a classic example of how politics in India never sleeps and political calculators never go silent. On the evening of March 10, when the Election Commission was wrapping up the EVMs which had delivered four state verdicts in favour of the BJP and one for the AAP, a new set of complex computations were initiated with a July deadline in mind. By July 24, India has to elect a new President. In October last year, President Ram Nath Kovind (whose five-year term ends in July 2022) turned 76. If the BJP applies PM Modi’s “no appointment to a public office after 75 years” formula, it can be safely said that the Modi-Shah duo along with the RSS are currently hunting for a new man or woman to occupy Rashtrapati Bhavan. Or, they are weighing if they can, in fact, repeat Kovind. The president’s election and the first two years of the five-year tenure of the next President of India promise to be the most gripping political potboilers. Why? Please read on. Before March 10, the national capital Delhi was abuzz with a new political spin. The forward-looking chatter involved a reverse calculation that to beat Narendra Modi in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, there are two critically linked pit stops. While the first was to defeat or drastically weaken BJP in the UP election in March 2022, the other was to reduce Modi’s “ease of ruling” by installing an Opposition man as President of India in July 2022. The key ingredient to the plan was an almost utopian unification o...

How Kejriwal built a massive Opposition campaign against Centre’s Delhi ordinance

Akhilesh Yadav met Arvind Kejriwal and Bhagwant Mann and pledged to oppose the Delhi Services Bill in Rajya Sabha. Kejriwal, who is on a nationwide campaign to ensure the defeat of the NCCSA Bill, has already received support from the 10 opposition parties. However, he continues to wait for a response from the Congress party. BJP bid to revive NDA for 2024: JD(S), TDP, Akalis back on table; new outreach to current friends

As the Opposition parties step up to build a united platform against the ruling BJP for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the saffron party has returned to kickstart talks with its erstwhile allies in a bid to breathe a new life into the NDA, even as the party has sought to firm up ties with its existing partners. Its rout in the recent Karnataka Assembly polls coupled with the rapidly-changing political situation seems to have forced the BJP to shed its tough stance against ex-partners that walked out of the party-led NDA on a sour note. Clearly, the party is again looking to stitch up a formidable coalition for the next general election. In a recent meeting with the BJP Chief Ministers and Deputy CMs in A number of BJP leaders have admitted that the exit of parties like the TDP, Uddhav Sena, SAD and JD(U) from the NDA over the years has given the party an image in public that it does not want to accept regional parties that are formidable forces in their respective states. Its friendly parties – the YSRCP in Andhra Pradesh or the BJD in Odisha – had not been ready for a formal alliance while remaining unwilling to be a part of the party-led government at the Centre. In Premium | According to sources, the BJP leadership has decided to keep aside its disenchantment with the SAD, which quit the NDA over the now-repealed contentious farm laws, after evaluating the The May by-election to the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat, a traditional Congress bastion, was won by the AAP with 34.1 pe...
