The Nehru Planetarium in New Delhi is located in the Teen Murti Bhawan and it is also known as the Nehru memorial museum and library. This building was previously served as the official residence of the Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru but is now transformed into a museum in his honor. The other four planetariums are located in Pune, Mumbai, Bangalore and Allahabad. The Nehru planetarium in Delhi is equipped with advanced technology that allow visitors to experience the wonders of space and astronomy in a very interactive way. It offers several shows and exhibitions that showcases the mysteries of the Universe, the Solar system and the evolution of our planet. The Planetarium of Nehru Centre was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India Smt. Indira Gandhi on 3 rd March 1977 with the objective of fostering scientific temper through the means of edutainment (that’s right! education + entertainment). Since its very first sky show, the planetarium has been making learning Astronomy a pleasant experience. The Planetarium Projectors have been an instrumental part of the shows – both literally and figuratively. The first was the “Universal Planetarium Projector” made by VEB Carl Zeiss Jena of the German Democratic Republic. It was an Opto-mechanical projector that delivered 28 shows in its 26 years of service and created a celestial experience for 96 Lakh viewers. The Program outlined the principal constellations and stars as seen in the sky on that historic day and ended with Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s speech at the Red Fort, Delhi. One of several planetariums set up to disseminate an interest in and an awareness of astronomy among the general public, the Nehru Planetarium in Delhi is located within the grounds of Teen Murti Bhawan, once the home of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. The planetarium has a small gallery of exhibits relating to astronomy (both related to India, and globally), but you see this only as a preliminary to the main focus of the planetarium, which is the show. The show at the planetarium is in two languages: English at 11.30 AM and 3 PM, and Hindi at 1:30 PM and 4 PM. Tickets for each show cost Rs 80 for an adult, and Rs 50 for a child above 4 years of age. The show is about 40 minutes long, and the ticket counter opens half an hour before the start of the next show. As soon as you’ve bought a ticket, you can enter the planetarium building and spend the time until your show starts looking at the exhibits, which include some interesting information on ancient astronomy (including models of the Jantar Mantar, insights into pioneers like Galileo and Herschel, how the ancients across the world viewed and interpreted the skies, and so on). This place has a number of very interesting science experiments, suitable for both kids and adults. Things like how pulleys work, how light refraction happens, how optical illusions work etc. Inside the planetarium one has shows at 12:30 and 1:30, ticket for the shows is Rs 75. There are also posters on the moon, planets, observatories in India, asteroids and how they look and what they are built of, etc. This is a fun outing for the whole family and definitely worth a visit. Go here if you are interested in the space, the place is good for kids to give them exposure to learn about the space around the earth, though it seems to be lacking in the latest technology. Kids would also enjoy the park and the swing rides, within the premises. It closes early in the evening so if you want to visit, go early.
