President Approves New Indian Navy Crest The Hon’ble President of India has approved introduction of a new design for the President’s Standard and Colour andIndian Navy Crestfor the Indian Navy, which were unveiled at Visakhapatnam on Navy Day on 04 Dec 2022. Resonant to the ongoing National endeavour to move away from the colonial past, the Naval Ensign was amended to a new Design that draws inspiration from our history where in the Red Horizontal and Vertical Lines on the White Ensign were replaced with an Blue Octagon with Twin Golden Borders encompassing the National Emblem atop a clear anchor and ‘National Emblem ‘Satyamev Jayate’ inscribed on the stock of the Anchor. Further, the National Flag was retained on the upper left canton. The erstwhile design of the President’s Standard and Colour for the Indian Navy was instituted on 06 Sep 2017. The design comprised one each horizontal and vertical red bands intersecting at the centre and the National Emblem inserted at their intersection. The National Flag was at the upper left canton adjacent to the staff and a Golden Elephant was at the lower right canton on the fly side. This design was inspired from the erstwhile Naval Ensign. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday unveiled the new ensign of the Indian Navy and commissioned INS Vikrant, the country'sfirst indigenously built aircraft carrier, at the Cochin Shipyard. In a bid to do away with the “colonial past”, the Saint George’s Cross has been removed from the Indian Navy’s new flag.One of the design elements honours Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha kingdom who had a naval fleet. The National Flag is on the upper canton and the blue octagonal shape encompasses the National Emblem, sitting atop an anchor that depicts steadfastness. This has been superimposed on a shelf depicting the Navy's motto --- "San No Varunah" in Devnagri. The octagonal shape represents eight directions symbolising the Indian Navy's multidirectional reach and multi-dimensional operational capability. The octagonal shape with twin golden borders draws its inspiration from the seal of the great Indian emperor Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, whose visionarymaritime outlook established an incredible naval fleet consisting of 60 fighting ships and approximately 5,000 men. A blue octagonal shape with the national emblem sits atop an anchor. The new Naval Ensign was unveiled by Prime Minister on Friday during the occasion of the commissioning of INS Vikrant, which is the first indigenously built Indian Aircraft Carrier. INS Vikrant will adorn the new White ensign with effect from its commissioning.
